Threads broke off on front shock stud
Threads broke off on front shock stud
When taking off my front passenger side shock, I was taking off the bolt over the stud at the bottom of the shock and most all of the threads broke off. All that is left now is the smooth part the shock sits on, and about 1 or 2 threads. Does anyone know if the stud can be replaced, or will I need to replace the whole unit the stud comes out of? Any ideas would be great.
mine did the same thing, call your local auto parts store and ask them, they sell repair kits.
basicly its a new stud that you have to bolt on, very common.
i didnt like the whole bolting it on idea so it got welded.

yep they sell repair kits. sadly if you would have asked you could have gotten that off with out it braking, you have to HEAT THE **** out of the nut and take it off with a hand ratchet and socket so you can feel when its gonna snap...
Oh well. The other side came off fine and didn't break. Do the repair kits require you to remove the unit compeltely? If so, how do you go about getting that out? It didn't look like there was a bolt on the other side, but it may have just been that rusted.
i dont remember how i got it out, i think i took the torch to it and melted it.
but you should be able to hammer it out. it should tell you how to get it out in the repair kit.
and it was heated up, even had PB blaster on it for about 15min

I called autozone and they said they have replacements of several different varieties. Most of them are a nut/bolt/stud type deal. I just need to figure out if the one I currently have that broke is welded onto the frame, or will back out with a wrench. It's so rusted its hard to tell. I may just cut the rest of the stud off with a grinder and then try to drill through. I dont know what I would use to drill through the rest of that bolt though.
Well I cut the stud off last night with a grinder, and most of the wider part that the stud sits on. I couldn't hammer it out. Then I drilled through to the other side, and I'm gonna see what the replacement kits look like/how they go in before I drill it anymore.
Yeah that's what I plan to do.
I also got the last of the rivets out of my stock axle pivot drop bracket, and went to put the new one in for my lift, and it doesn't even line up! There was nothing in instructions about having to cut part of the frame. The lip that curves out keeps the new one from sitting flush. It was not a good end to my night. I suppose Ill have to take a grinder or something and take part of it back to get it to line up. It ticks me off because the driver side didnt sit straight either. I'd think they could make it fit a little better off the bat.

I went by the parts house last night, and the new kid at the counter said they had nothing along those lines. I was going to wait for her person I had talked to previously on the phone but had to go. Hopefully today I can go get a replacement and get that on.
I got one of the universal replacements. Grinded off most of the old one and bolted the new one in. It's pretty sturdy, but I'm going to take a torch to it to toughen it up some. Thanks for the help.
