Hey guy i got a rear diff cover from evan a while back and have yet to get it installed..my question is is there a step by step tutorial on how to take the cover off and drain the fluid and put new fluid in and what type

 

put drain pan underneath. un bolt. let drain. clean off gear lube from the axle, scrape off gasket material from edge of the opening. fluid type and amount is located in your owners manual i cant remember off hand. obtain a gasket from the store, some use it some don't. i do.. or use gasket sealer like RTV all around the edge rebolt up.. then take out the fill plug from the front and fill and drive...

take off the bolts most of it will drain out from it takin off the cover..then i just took brake cleaner and hosed it down..get 90% of it with the natural draining and cleaner..on the opposite side of the cover by the driveshaft..drivers side there is a bolt thats where you fill it from..

drain..clean..scrape off the old gasket..lay new..put back on..fill her up..until shes comin out the top of the fill hole..you be good to go..

watch it a day or so after to make sure your not leakin..

 

sounds good iam going to use the black rtv sealer....so spraying brake cleaner in the rear end dosent hurt anything?

 

did you get a regualar rear end cover or an explorer cover?

either way here goes.....

tools needed:
socket set
putty knife

material needed:
1 8.8 diff cover gasket (usually $10 at an auto parts joing)
4 quarts of diff fluid (i would recommend full synthetic, if you have a limited slip and you go full synthetic you dont need friction modifier)

-place a drain pan under the rear end housing
-remove the fill plug on the front, upper, driver side of the diff
-remove the bolts on the rear end cover leaving the upper 2 slightly installed so the fluid can drain
-pry the cover lose at the bottom
-let the fluid drain until it stops
-remove the upper couple of bolts and grab the cover
-clean the surface on the diff were the cover was with a putty knife or other tool simular
-use a CLEAN towl to wipe out the remaining diff fluid in the bottom that wouldn't come out
-put the diff cover back on with the gasket between the diff and the cover
-be sure not to over tighten the cover bolts
-now fill the diff throught the front fill hole until the fluid is level with the hole
-dispose of any old diff fluid the same way you do with oil

Word of caution. Do not over tighten bolts!

I changed my diff fluid just two days ago and got hosed when a bolt snapped off inside the diff. Had my roomate driving me around picking up new bolts, more gear oil, and a bolt extractor kit. It sucked. Fortunately the bolt extractor kit worked awesome, just had to drill a hole in the broken bolt, then use a different drill bit that cork screwed it out. But yea, do everything you can to avoid that.. it's no fun.

this is a week old...its been done.....lol thanks anyways..i tightened them to factory specs
