Orange sparks comming from exhaust

When I was driving around tonight me and my brother decided to do a little drag race. we lined up and we took off I was out in front and he was behind me and he noticed orange sparks comming from my straight piped exhaust and bouncing on the road. Why is it doing this? is it bad? I have a 2001 ranger with the muffler cut off and a down pipe put in its place. Oh and for those who want to know my brother drives a 2002 mazda protege.

if you have cats its prolly the material inside...or your engine could be melting to pieces due to all the lost back pressure lol.<iono

this reminds me of when I had my 94 Transam, I had done alot of motor work to it and me and a buddy were cruisin home one night and this convertible mustang with a bunch of girls in it and a guy driving pull up beside me and he starts revving and acting like he wants to run. At first I wasnt going to, then I was like screw it. So I hit the gas and I'm already a little ahead of him when apparently my buddy says flames shot out the exhaust a couple feet, next thing I know the mustang hits the brakes and pulls off the road. We were going under an overpass when I hit it and my buddy said it lit up the whole underpass, guess when the guy saw that he figured there wasnt a chance.

could be unburned fuel getting passed the catalytic converter.
