Anyone know or can recommend a kit for converting over to propane on my 04 4.0L 4x4 ranger? is it even really possable with all the computers and stuff in a newer truck?

ive seen it done, look for one of our Brazilian members and PM or email them, they do that kind of stuff around there all the time.

i know they posted a link to a company that sells a kit but not sure where did u search?

 

try talking to www.gotpropane.com and see what they can set you up for. It'll cost probably about 500-750 I think. That's about what it cost for my sammi.

 

isnt propane just as expensive if not more than gasoline? just curious. what are the benefits of propane over gasoline?

 

round these parts, I can score propane for real cheap......try a buck less than regular gas.

Why cant we do newer vehicles?

The computer systems in fuel injected vehicles do not work with the propane systems. Our kits are designed to eliminate wiring. There is no way to make a newer vehicle work without tampering with the computer. By law it is illegal to tamper with a newer vehicle to make a street legal conversion. The computers control ignition timing, auto transmissions, and emissions control. We don't have a way to certify our kits either. It is tens of thousands to get a kit certified. And it only covers the one model and engine size. So it is not legal, very complicated , and very expensive to do. " from the gotpropane website...

doesnt mean that someone couldnt make a kit for it but since i would need lots of puter work im guessing it would put it out of my price range ... im dreaming... maybe i just need to fix up my ranger sell it and buy a older on that i can do this too....

 

the guy in brazil probably added propane injection to compliment diesel. Propane on diesel is similar to nitrous on gasoline. brother added propane to his 6.o turbo diesel. It makes it go.

 

I know it can be done to the 2.3 but I have not seen it done on a 3.0 or 4.0.

we have a 2.3 fuel injected at work that has been converted to propane and still uses the stock injectors.

i mean, is it comparable to regular gas gallons?

so like, its 3.15 for a gal of gas, how much is it for propane? and does it use the same amount of the gas?

This whole thread is very informative I always thought that you could only convert a diesel I didn't know you could convert gasoline to propane.

its a big thing with toyota's and older v8's as the propane allows them to run at any angle.

 

I really don't know mileage on it. It is a industrial truck that has a custom body and frame with a 500 gallon tank on the back for water and oil recovery.

I will get some specs( if I can find the book on it) and pics of it tomorrow.

If you have a diesel... propane injection gives a lot more HP and gives u a cleaner burn and you burn more of the fuel that goes into the combustion area (a good thing)


Propane is a biproduct of making natural gas (useing petrolium just like normal gasoline) so the price of propane shadows the price gasoline

If you convert over to 100% propane power, u will loss some say around 10% HP

If you convert over to 100% propane the stuff that comes out of your tailpipe is much cleaner

If you convert over to 100% propane your engine oil stays much cleaner longer and doesnt break up as fast

this is what ive found out while researching. I may be a little off on some of this and keep in mind some of the sites i got this info are trying to sell propane kits or being green (treehuggers)

Also, anyone here really into taxes? if someone did convert over to propane would they get a tax credit? if so how much??

this is my first post in this forum.
i'm a brazillian ranger owner and here petrobras, the state petroil company, had installed many gas stations along brazil's southest providing natural gas for vehicles, or what we call here, GNV - gas natural for vehicles.
(sorry for the terrible english!)
what ford started to do this year was to offer an optional GNV kit for standard gasoline rangers, for single & double cabin. diesel rangers does not accept GNV.
you buy the GNV kit from a distributor/installer that ford indicates, pay about US$ 3000 directly to them and ford and this distributor/installer gives you 2 years of plenty waranty for engine, just like for the other car parts.
that's cool here because 1m3 of GNV costs about half (US$ 0,60) of 1 liter of gasoline (US$ 1,20) and we can road the same distance, about 10 km/l or 10km/m3.
the kit comes with a 25m3 cilynder and some engines, installled on the back of the truck. it occupies about 1/3 of the space of a double cabin back... that sucks!
