Informal Poll: Is the EATC mod worth it?

Hey all, it's me again. I've been trying to decide what I want to do next to my truck (modding quickly became a hobby of mine, lol). I'm definitely eying the EATC mod, however I don't have A/C in my truck.

So, my question is this. Without A/C, is the EATC mod worth pursuing?

I understand that the EATC still has benefits for the winter months, and it should still basically work the same during warm weather as my manual controls. I'm not sure if I want to put A/C in my truck or not at this point. The heat doesn't bother me too much and I think it may be too much work for me. Thoughts?

Oh, and runner up for the next mod candidate is power mirrors. When I get the funds.

I was about to say "definitely... and then some" but then I realized you don't have A/C. Buying the compressor and all that business could get really expensive really fast.

Yeah, I don't think I want to put A/C in there just yet. But I wonder if the EATC without it is worth the trouble of the mod.

Well if I do I may be hitting you up for parts, if you still got 'em. I got a little curious recently and bought the headunit on eBay. Vacuum lines were cut and there's no wire harness, but that's small potatoes for me (given I can find a new vacuum harness. I know the year of the h/u and got pinouts from N3lz's cardomain page, so if nothing else I'll solder up some new connectors). Other then that I just need... everything else.

I'm leaning towards doing it. Would be fun, and it really doesn't look that difficult. Hardest part for me will probably (as always) be getting to the parts I need to on the truck (blower control and whatnot).

Being I have the EATC and have removed the entire unit from two vehicles, I say go for it if you are going through the expense of adding A/C. No disrespect to Biz, but I highly recommend trying to get an entire system if possible. Both of mine came out of 99 Explorer Eddie Bauer editions. I will keep my eyes open for another system, but my advice is start checking junkyards.

Well, I think I'm going to do it, but leave A/C out of it.

Question... I got the unit powered up, and it looks like it has a temp range of 60F to 90F. If it was say 45F outside and I wanted to blow in cold air (full vent like on my manual controls), would setting it to MAX A/C 60F blow in 45F or would it warm it up to 60F?

(update)

Got an email from the seller of my EATC H/U. I *think* he found the plugs, and I *think* they're on their way... anyone else able to decipher this?

"FINED PLUGS BUT THE COLOR ARE BLACK AND GRAY SHOULD NT FIND THAT YEAR TRUCK PLUG WE GOT FOUR PLUG EMAIL ADDRESS WILL SEND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THEM. BUT WILL BE LOOK OUT FOR OTHER PLUGS ZEROCHICO"

What happened to grammer? Makes my head hurt...

Golly is the pirate really getting into everyone?!?!!

Eying? is that a referance to an eye patch?

Or are you screaming, Eee! , every time you think of it?

Sorry, in a picky mood.

Using MAX A/C without a compressor would operate the blower fan and recirculate the interior air. The amount of outside air entering would be a very small percentage.

If you want outside air through the vents, use the VENT button. If the display temperature is set to 60F, the EATC will use the heater to warm the interior air to 60F and maintain it there.

EATC is my favorite of all the mods I've done to my truck. One advantage in the winter is the fan does not blow cold air. It waits for the OBC to tell it heat is available.
The other is that it keeps an even temp in the winter without ever touching the system. In the summer you do notice the A/C cycling on and off. I think I'm getting better gas mileage in the summer due to the compressor not running constantly. I wish Bob or John or someone would comment on that.

If it is wired according to John's How-to, the compressor can be disabled anytime you want by using the "Rear Fan Off" button. I have the compressor off most of the winter but allow it to operate when the defrost needs a boost. (When it is very cold out, the A/C compressor may not operate at all.)

A/C compressor cycling is used to prevent evaporator coil freeze-up any time of the year. The compressor can cycle summer or winter but the frequency can be very different. This applies equally to EATC and manual systems.

The lower FE in the winter is usually caused by higher initial startup friction, longer warmup cycles and fuel blending.

What's wrong with the expression? I must be missing something...

Well, the more I think about it the more I think I want to do it. I'm a sucker for the digital things... and it's green which goes well with my OHC and radio. Yup. EATC's next.
