well function over look.

i want to get my icom 208H in my truck, no biggie i guess transciver behind the seat and control head mounted cleanley on the dash somewhere. but my issue is the antenna. i want to hard mount it, yet i have a 94 regular cab. and ive tryed a small 440mhz nmo antenna just sitting up there in the middle and stood back. too tell ya tha truth it looked like ***.

i want a good dualband antenna and good proformance so when im driving out to the boondocks to work i can still shoot the breeze on the repeater. yet i like to wheel, and dont want to tear it off on a tree. i though about down on the left bed rail like my CB antenna is on the right. but that low i loose proformance, and the 208H will put out a good 55watts at full power on 144mhz dont need to be fryin my brain cells more than i need too. yea back it off power wise but sometime ya need that extra umph.

any ideas? yea go for what works best but i still want to keep the "looks" within reason. my CB is not bad its like 3" taller than my am/fm antenna so its passable.

other than the 2 mag mounts there where am i going to mount those on the roof? i could see on the top of the door but i dont know. theres no lip on the door jam. id have to mount it on the door itself. i have the k400 on my moms van and it works nice but i dont think it would work for my truck.

this install im really thinking about the RF because my cab is so small, on the roof im fine but anywhere lower and more line of sight through the cab. usualy i dont worry cause im somewhat spaced from my antenna.

 

I like the mounts that go into the stake pockets. I had my last one on the back passenger side pockets. For the most part it was far enough away to not get reflections off the cab. The only issue I can see is I'm not sure if they make a dual wave stick.

well this is the antenna im going to use. its dualband but it doesnot have a plastic cased coil that can be damaged on the trail.

Ok, here it is. This is my complete Radio setup. This is Offroad tested and took a HELL of a beating and Still rocks!!!! Also, I put a field strength meter in the cab for the 50 Yaesu 2M and the cab shields the passengers. It is effectively 10 watts inside the vehicle on 50 watts out.

And for the Distance question, I have always had this antenna mounted here and I can get an easy 50-75 miles on a Normal day here in Hampton Roads, and when I do travel, she does superbly on simplex going down the road. I can get almost a full 60 miles out of her.




Here's the Ground Wire for both radio's. 2M is ground off the mount screw on the mount.

usualy i wont worry about the rf exposer but since my cab is standard im alot closer to the antenna.

heh going to HRO in burbank here soon, go bug the old timers there.

 

RF Exposure in our trucks is minimal if you mount where I did... my Antenna is such a High Gain Wide Bandwidth antenna that the cab does a dang good job sheilding the inside. I woulde recommend my setup to ANYONE!!!! Even if trail running / Mudding... I have beat the **** out of mine on trees and just normal bouncing around and the antenna kept asking for more!!!! PLUS, the antenna can fold over Right above that Black coil cover at the base.

 

you would think the back glass would let the rf through. is it maybe in your case because it is tinted?

just a guess cause ive read the think has some metallic to it.
