Since its a 5spd> check for tranny leaks, make sure it shifts smooth. Thats just a start but im sure others will have plenty more to add.

sending unit is prone to gauge problems, yoke on the rear end is prone to the driveshaft hitting it due to bad u joints and odometer gear is known to breaking causing the odo and trip to stop working...all problems i have on mine and all are problems many others have had...plus what chris said...listen for noises as shifting and make sure everything sounds right...

Its usually not a major problem to fix, but most 93-97 rangers have problems with the fuel float f***ing up, so the fuel gauge wont work. You'd have to drop the tank, remove the sending unit and replace the float to fix the problem. Unless the sending units the problem, but every case ive seen of the gauge not working is due to the float getting a hole in it and taking gas in, causing the gauge to read empty always

lol mine screwing up was auto zone giving me a sending unit that was to long and not taking in back...so half a tank is empty...but really 2.3s are not prone to really any major problems as long as regular maintence is up kept...i am selling mine but your to far...
