how much boost on a 4.0

ok after a little research i see the 05+ mustangs v6 are running up to 20 psi boost with no internals touched and i`m a bit confused.. i was under the impression that if we ran that much on our 4.0 sohc it would blow the f up.. so my question is how much boost are your 4.0 guys running with no internals touched? and what you are running if you have some internals touched.

edit: on a turbo.

Becuase they arent 100% the same engines, the numbers your getting are from the mustangs verison of the 4.0 sohc

i thought they have the same internals though.. ???

could someone shed some light on this??

@offroad
some mustang forum.. i think allfordmustangs.com and they were discussing a turbo and this one company

http://powerhouse411.com/catalog/ind...products_id=77

that turbo kit comes with a 9, 11, 20 psi spring for the wastegate....

can i assume that we can run 9 psi on our trucks???

First thing to keep in mind not all turbos are equal.
second intercooled an non intercooled make a world of difference
I would say 5-6 psi non intercooled and 8-10 psi intercooled but the turbo sizing will make a huge difference

Just keep adding boost until it blows up. Then go down a couple of pounds and your set. LOL

I'm not sure if the 4.0 in the Mustang is exactly the same but they are similar. Maybe different cams and different intake plenum. The Ranger 4.0 puts out 207hp @ 5250rpm and 238tq @ 3000rpm while the Mustang 4.0 puts out 210hp @ 5300rpm and 240tq @ 3500rpm.

Check out PDP. NicksterSVT owns/ co-owns(not sure) it and he is a member here. Before he went turbo his truck was putting 450ish to the wheels with a blower on a fully built motor(i think). All I know is that his truck hauls *** and it revs up to 8000 rpm.

ya. the turbo i have sitting in my garage is a t3 off a skyline gtst (rb25). so im thinking that if i have it on the ranger it will be past 4000rpm before i hit full boost. i will have it intercooled (i would never run boost without one) but not a big one.. and still im thinking 6 psi.. until i feel comfortable to take it to 9.

so stock internals with 6 psi.. just below 300hp to the rear wheel sound good???

ill get right on that.. but just one question.. if my engine blows up... how do i put it back together??? duct tape??? i think that'll do it.

those numbers seem to reflect that they are exactly the same engine.. haha. a difference of 2 or 3 seems to be in the margin of error... (i just took that AP Stats test and already how to prove this stuff... FYI i did pass... )

i dont think i'll be building a motor here.. way out of my budget.. and i also remember what happens when you try to raise a low reving engine to 8000rpm..

loved this when i was on the nissan forums.

you can run 9psi. i think even up to 12, there is a member here that runs a m112 super charger and pushed right up to 300hp on the dyno then the timing chain broke.

With the high compression and the hypereutectic pistons the 4.0L SOHC has, you cannot exceed 5-6 PSI with a roots/screw style supercharger.

Everyone who has, has ended up with piston failure shortly after the increase in boost. 5-6 is the MAX for a stock 4.0.

i have got contradicting information in less than 30 mins.. one person says 6 psi is the max.. and one says 9psi no probelm.. maybe even 12..

piston failure??? what do you mean once increasing the boost???

he means guys start out at 6 increase to 9 maybe 12 and they have engine troubles.

almost everyone that i know that bought a supercharger and put it on a ranger is either near their 2nd engine or is in the process of rebuilding it.

D.
NicksterSVT
BlkTremor02
440volt

the list goes on.

i said you can run 9 or 12, for how long not sure? i bet you could get away with running 9-12 at the track then dropping that back down to 5 or 6 for daily commute. I think air temps come into effect as well. There are some guys effectively using the power with some water injection or an intercooler.

With current track record I think you should go into planning on a new engine in the future or always the possibility of it blowing.

I wouldn't even trust upping the boost for the track, if you want more power there are other ways to do it.

5-6 PSI is going to be good for at least 220-230 RWHP, with headers, exhaust, MAF, injectors, and a dyno tune you MAY be able to reach 250 RWHP. This is depending if you are auto/manual or 4x2/4x4.

I am pretty sure Nick swapped for a different pulley (more boost), what about the others?

With a good tune and if you keep it at 5-6 PSI there shouldnt be an issue.

If you looking to get a lot more power and not blow engines then skip the boost and swap in a 302. Or spend the cash and build a 4.0.

half of them did and half didnt. if you get to searching around you will find more with the same issues.

thats what i thought.. 5-6 max.. 20psi on a stock 4.0 is nuts.. youd be picking up pieces of your motor off the streets lol
