I am in the market for a Toolbox for my truck. I have found a few types of toolboxes that I like and am contemplating.
I found one at Lowes made by Kobalt and it was a Slim toolbox. Not sure if I like it though cause it may not have enough room for some stuff.

I prefer the low profile models. My next will be a black one.

 

I think that would be too slim for my use. I have a $50 low profile i bought off craigslist. Drilled the pop rivets out of the handles and removed them..scuffed and painted it black. (it was nasty 'chrome', and i hate polishing). It's really nothing fancy, it's a $50 box and gets the job done. I bought two big 1/2" ring eyes from lowes and installed them in the corners of the box, they are my 'new' front bed tiedowns.

Fits a fair amount of stuff in it, I didnt lose any visibility out of my rear glass. I've seen some of the 'normal' boxes in our trucks, I'd imagine it be a pain to see out the back glass.

 

I have the thin Kobalt on my truck and it's worked out okay for me. I keep a small selection of tools, extension chords, jumper cables, and a first aid kit in there and it's plenty of room for that. I didn't want the larger one for two reasons, one it costs a lot more, and two, it takes up too much of my truck bed space. So I say it depends on how much tools you want to carry around, I just have a small bucket full of tools and a small plastic tool box. Just the essentials. I keep the majority of my tools at home, unless I need them for a project.

I have had no visibility problems with this tool box at all.

Yeah, I would like to get the slim cover black toolbox but I just cant afford it right now, I only have about $150 to spend on one right now and I found a 6 month old Husky normal size toolbox that fits the truck and he will let me have it for $75. So I think I am going to go with that. I do believe that the short box would be too small for what I would use it for also. Maybe one day I might trade the Husky box for a Black Slim cover box. Thanx for the pictures and advice. It really did help me out with what I was lookin for.
Another guy on Craigslist has a "Gull Wing" style box and want $50 for it but it looks like it needs some major buffing to get the dull look out of it. What do yall think about those style boxes??

i took off my toolbox and put a tonneau on. 3 shoeboxes and a milkcrate work just fine for me for all the stuff that used to be in my toolbox.

 

i got a craftsman one on my truck ABS plastic looks nice and is pretty roomy for a small truck box

 

I never saw a thin one either till one day at Lowe's. At first I thought it was too thin, but after thinking about it, it was better than no tool box, as it would give me a space other than my cab, to keep stuff. I don't need to carry around a lot of tools, so this is working out great for me. I can alway change what I keep in there as needed, so it's handy.

So I say it depends on what you're planning to do with your truck. Do you need to carry a bunch of power tools everyday ?? Then maybe you do need a bigger box.

 

Yeah, I dont drive the truck much but when I do, most likely the truck will be put to work. I carry straps and bungies, Flashlights and a air compressor (a small emergency tire pump basically) and my hitch stuff and a few tools in a small case. I also have a fire extenguisher in the side pocket as well. I need to find a decent place to mount my Fire ext. and I want to put another one in the toolbox.
Im pretty sure all of that will fit in there. Do you have a little organizer or a tray or anything like that in it or do you know if they even make one?
Let me know cause I wanna get one today and the other ones that I found are a little bit of a drive and I would end up paying a little bit more for the larger used ones just because I would have to drive so far.

 

I don't know about any Kobalt organizer, but I use a simple plastic paint bucket, sized just big enough to sit in the toolbox. I got that from Lowe's as well. I use that for large hand tools like hammers, channel locks, ect. I also have a small plastic tool box that holds smaller hand tools like screwdrivers, tape measure, razor knife, VOM meter, etc......then I also have a back pack full of first aid supplies. A camouflage tarp, extension chords, bungy chords, rope, jumper cables.....

 

I had a Low profile TaylorWinngs box. I liked it but it was to short IMO. A jug of anti-freeze standing up was almost to tall for the lid to shut.

I got this weatherguard after the TaylorWings box went **** up. I dont notice any lack of visibility unless Im turned around lookin out the back window. I dont even see the box in the rear view mirrow. Love this box. Still got room to fit a dirtbike in the bed as well

low pro ftw! but...i do LOVE my deep compact delta champion. not too tall....not too short.....kinda in the middle. i think it's like 4.5" above the rail?

 

I like my tonneau cover, gives me a 6 foot long by 4 foot wide "toolbox"

I've got a Huskey low profile box, and it's alright for light duty stuff, but once you put more then a few pounds in, the lid hates you. I have to keep the latch held open in order to shut it, because the box starts to bow in the middle if I have too much stuff in there. I plan on getting a bigger box some day, but for now, I can't complain too much.

It'll save you money from buying those clamps, and you won't have to drill holes in the bed. I still have my box installed that way, and it still is perfect.

As far as tow points go, I did what Goodysgottacuda did and just added some eye bolts.
