Fan Clutch
what happens when a fan clutch stops working properly?
does it stick and keep the fan on the entire time the engines running
does it just stop spinning completely
someone help me out here because my engine sounds like a the fan is on the entire time and when i accelerate i have lost alot of power.. and its not my transmission because i just got it checked out and serviced and its not cuz i have 3.73's with 33's with a automatic 3.0 because i never did this when i first got my tires on for months until i got chucks of mud all up in my fan and stuff...
and my 8.8 with the 4.56's are going to be installed monday so i will gain some power back but i believe this problem will still be accuring
any ideas or solutions?

take fan off using special fan removal tools. if you've got a shroud, botth the shroud and fan come out at same time together. it's like 4 10mm bolts to seperate the fan from the clutch. replace clutch. mount fan and shroud. done.
errr.. my little fan clutch led me to find out that it had destroyed my water pump also... this kinda thing always seems to happen to me.. lol the rod that the fan and fanclutch is attached to that goes into the water pump was cracked and mis-shaped in multiple spots so i luckily came up with enough money to replace them both earlier today, but now my ole 2wd is back on the road and she drives like a champ!!
i guess since it took me so long to point out the problem i could have saved my water pump if i was a little quicker....

Aw no.. what a pain, but at least you found the problem before anything very major. I need a fan clutch as well, all the time just COLD temp.. never wants to warm up, hopefull won't find what you did.. *fingers crossed*
I think your problem is the thermostat. Even if the fan clutch locks up, the thermostat should be able to keep the correct engine temp.
mine when out too. but the day i was replacing mine my timing chain broke so its not only you it happens too. but i would replace it asap. just to be on the safe side. and how many miles are on your truck? bc since your doing the water pump better do the timing chain too
The thermostat controls the engine temp, the fan clutch does not!! The fan clutch senses the air temp coming off the radiator, NOT the coolant temp in the engine! You can prove this by letting your e-fan run continuously, and watch the engine temp.
If the thermostat sticks shut, the engine will overheat even if the fan clutch is frozen!

true, but if your fan is on full blast, the coolant will never get to proper temp thus not opening the t-stat
Also keep in mind, the older cars and trucks didn't use a fan clutch at all!!!
When I first wired my efan direct just for testing purposes, I ran it for several days like that, always on when the key was on. It was only tempoary until my thermoswitch came from summit. The truck warmed up regularly and everything was normal. The fan constatnly running did not keep the engine from warming up. I have a 180 thermostat, so you can see the gauge rise up, then when the thermosthat opens, it goes down slightly. It was doing that as it normally would even with the fan always on. Im not taking sides here, im just adding this in for the record.
Ford's R&D costs are in the billions, and they do way more testing than any aftermarket company. They know how to build a pretty good vehicle that will last a very long time when maintained and used within its limits. If you want to modify your truck, that's cool, it's your truck. You're doing it at your own risk though. It's not Ford's responsibility to deal with any damage that could have resulted from something they didn't do to the truck.
