Do you need to do anything special to change from conventional to syntec?

 

Some people say to use half and half first then full synthetic when switching over. I just went full synthetic with no problems.

 

Same here, I went from regular to full synthetic. I run Mobil 1 with a Motorcraft filter and it works great for me.

 

It depends on how many miles on the vehicle, sometimes switching high mileage vehicles to synthetic will do more harm then good.

 

Regular oil should be good enough for this type of pickup, no need to waste money. Just change oil every 3000-5000 miles.

 

But wouldn't switching over to synthetic save money? By not having to change it as often?

But with high miles I just cracked 117,000

Yeah but that many miles the seal in your engine are used to dino oil. Using synthetic could start a leak. Just go half and half with good stuff like Castrol Syntech Blend and then go to full synthetic on the next oil change. Just watch for leaks.

I run Castrol Syntech full synthetic oil and Lucas oil stabilizer with a Mobil One filter and I change it every 5000 miles. Next oil change I will be switching to Amsoil Signature oil and filter and I will be changing it every 7500.

 

synthetic is expensive, i used to work at jiffy lube and there is not side effect of using full synthetic on a high mileage engine but it probobly would be better to go with a synthetic blends, its cheaper and lasts about as long, ford motorcraft makes a good one.

 

Be careful, In one of my dads old car, he put synthetic oil in it and ruined it. It needed a quart of oil a day for the rest of the time he had it. Although, I think he went straight to it, he didnt know you're supposed to blend it, 'then' go to straight synthetic

 

I bought a 2003 last month and the previous owner used Valvoline 10w30. On recomendation here, I switched to Mobil 1 7500 ,a syn blend. The engine runs smoother and quiter, you cant hear it at stop lights plus gas mileage has increased dramatically.Its been 900 miles and im not seeing any leaks at all. 41000 original miles.Im gointg to put syn in the tranny and rearend too.Glad i switched!

 

Hmm I think tomorrow I'll start the blend and maybe just stick with it to see how it feels. Then maaaaaaybe try a full blend. But thank you guys a lot for the help!

 

At 125k miles I did a full straight synthetic.

If you plan on doing it, do it right: Get some Seafoam, run it through the engine, then stick a third of a can into your oil directly from the engine... drive it for a few days, or take a 100 mile road trip in it; then dump all the oil, buy a good filter (I recommend K&N due to the wlded on nut), and a few quarts of whatever synthetic you want... I used royal purple on mine, and it runs -fantastic-

 

The problem with running seafoam through in your oil is that it will clean too well and the sludge that keep your engine together will be washed out.

Just to add extra info on top of my previous reply about this topic. My b2300, '94 has 253K miles and is still running great with no engine issue at all. I have tried all kind of oils throughout all these years. My finally conclusion is not what type of oil you use, it is how often you change your oil. Trust me, don't waste money on expensive oil that makes you think it will do more.

I'm not trying to make my truck run any better. I just don't want have to change my oil as often. Then I heard it make it run better, so that was a boost. But I'll most likely just stick with conventional oil. Ended up not changing my oil today.

Yea i did that too and seized up my engine XD had one quart of oil in it time to rebuild. i guess i learned my lesson.

 

dont waste your money on blend, and syntec isnt even a full synthetic so dont waste your money there. your motor has gone this long on dino just stick with dino and a regular filter

 

the siyn will leak more if you have oil leaks

 

i just got a motorcraft filter and a 5 qt jug of valvoline 5w30 dino at walmart for $14.48 total... so how to beat that ? it will go 5000 miles easy between changes.

you guys sure have alot of wrong ideas about synthetic oils


It DOES NOT start leaks
It CAN be mixed with regular oil
It DOES NOT need to be slowly swapped to synthetic



Synthetic oil is thinner then regular oil. So if it starts to leak, its because you had a leak to begin with, the regular oil was just too thick to come thru

Most synthetic oils have seal restorers as well, but if you are worried, always try some high mileage oils.

You shouldnt have to do any slow swaps to full synthetic, because all engine oils miz together, you just wont see full life out of it if regular oil is mixed in
