What can I expect from this Mod

I was thinking of doing a couple of easy and inexpensive mods, remove the snorkle on the air box as shown in the how to section and install a drop in K&N air filter. What should I expect from doing this. Also will removing the snorkle in the air box cause a lot of air noise when driving the interstate?

Yeah you might get some extra mpg back from a clean filter but thats it. Make sure you don't over oil the filter or you'll get some MAF problems.

If you have a SOHC 4.0 and an automatic transmission, you may experience a bucking/jerking symptom at cruising speed.

Search for 4.0 bucking/jerking or look for crazymikey's post on it.

The bucking/jerking is caused by MAF voltage spikes from the k&n not having a consistent air flow through it, it does not offer the mild air resistance that the stock filter does.

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across a crowded floor, they worked from 8 till 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?

Ohh... wrong thread - you will gain a whopping .5 HP

I agree with zabeard - don't take advice from a noob. I have a K&N Drop in replacement in my ranger and it runs just like stock, not louder, no swoosh noises, no mpg gains, no power gains either. Just like stock.

I did it because I have always felt K&N filters clean better without restricting the flow.

After I clean mine, and oil it. I let it dry to make sure there is not going to be oil squirting up and coating the MAF. It's not that hard really. All you need to do is make sure the filter looks the red/orange color.

I think his air box was also not totally sealed before, he fixed that at the same time so people just assumed it was the filter when it could have been either or.

a noob? ha ok...

like i stated before, believe me or not, i really dont care. i did tests with IDS watching MAF voltage under normal driving conditions and watching the MAF voltage changes with a stock pleated element and with a k&n. It happened two a few people on here and they fixed their problem SOLELY on replacing the k&n with a pleated paper element. Others on here needed to clean their MAF, replace airbox clips etc..

I have run k&n filters in every single vehicle i have ever owned except for my Ranger. If i had an auto, i definitely wouldn't run a k&n. The maf voltage spikes are read by the PCM and send signals to the trans causing the bucking/jerking. Im not sure what changes in the trans, the trans guy at work told me, but i don't remember. 04ranger4.0 (mark) i think is his name, replaced his k&n and nothing else, and got rid of the bucking.

Do any of the ranger intakes have a honeycomb filter before the maf? I've never taken mine apart to look.

IMO the best "cheap mod" would just be a tune up and change of all the fluids.

Just about the next cheapest way to increase power is a conical air fliter and a aftercat exhaust. Underdrive pullies are good too.

the truck will "Sound" faster, but in reality, it will gain about 3hp.

Exhaust and intake mods on a stock engine and stock tune are a big waste.
