Towing with 33's
Towing with 33's
I'm looking into getting 33x10.5 bfg a/t. Will I still have enough power and braking to be able to safely tow. Nothing big. I'm going to be borrowing my dads boat (12 and 16 ft) and atv and snowmobile (separate trips). Will i still be able to do that once i have bigger tires?
edit: I'm planning on cragar 8's. So that would be a bit more weight as well.

My moms sebring could to that little jet ski lol. That's nothing compared to what he's talking about.
If i read that right, you plan on towing a boat, atv, AND snowmobile? Or separate trips??
What rear gears do you have is what makes the difference...4.10s?

The more I am driving my truck just with 31s on the Cragars, I am noticing a big weight difference. It's also eating into my fuel economy slightly. I have to push the truck harder going up hills, use more effort from a stop to get going, and they're heavy enough that as soon as you let your foot off the gas you start scrubbing speed as if the brakes are applied.
I miss my aluminum wheels.

O, on separate trips. I was mainly worried about putting the boat in the water and then being able to get it out (i've only done it with my dads f150). And being able to stop with it. The biggest is a 16 ft aluminum boat. I don't think it's very heavy. Plus any extra gear i pack into it. I don't think it will be a problem, but i haven't towed anything with my truck yet.
Its a 2001 4x4. With 4.10's

towed a 350 with a ranger.. wow
i feel bad for your brakes, what does a 350 weigh? close to 9,000 lbs?
i towed like a 16 or 18' car hauler empty and that put a strain on the truck but i was also at 7200 feet on 35s

I would like to define my 350 towing. he broke down and i towed him home.. literally with a tow strap not on a tralier. so he did the braking i did the powering. My truck didnt even mind it.. 4 lo, 6 inches of snow, 20 mph = FTW.
Cause i say 4low = pwnage.
I didnt even think to try towing it in 4high.. probably could of but i went for torque on the snow.
Ranger sticks. They are rated less but that is mostly due to a crappy clutch with a crappy driver behind the wheel. Some people say that if you can drive stick well then you can tow as much as the auto Ranger is rated for. I still don't trust that transmission.
I think if you put a decent clutch and have an idea of how to tow without RIDING the clutch you can tow the same as the auto with less wear and tear.
I've done it.
I have the BFG A/T 33x10.5's and have towed my friend's 20' boat and trailer. You could obviously tell it was back there, but the power and the braking were more than enough to move the boat around town, as well as getting it in and out of the water.
Well, what type of boats are they? If it's a 16' flats boat or bass boat you'll be fine. If it's a bay boat you'll be maxing out, if it's an offshore center console or walk just don't even bother lol.
I have a 06 ranger lifted with 31in. off road tires and it was noticeably more strain on the motor. the gears would shift at bad points on the hiway and hills when i pulled my trailer for of comercial mowers. i bought the superchips and it mad a great improvement on the power and shifting. it felt like it did before i lifted and put on the bigger tires. i felt the chip was a very good investment. i would have even more power if i filled with premium and switched modes.
