I have a problem, I have a loud screeching sound coming from somewhere in the rear when i turn right. It did it the other day while driving. But on my way home later that day there was nothing. Started again today. I'm not sure if it happens while going straight, but I can only hear it turning right. We have a ton of snow right now, and I don't have access to an indoor work area. So hopefully it warms up soon. I am planning on lifting the back up, and run the truck so the rear moves, and see if i can find out where its coming from.

Is there any way its just crap stuck in the rear drums? I don't understand how if its in the rear why it only does it turning one way. But any idea's of what it could be?

There is alot of things that can cause that. Start with the easiest...
Check tire pressure...
Bad shocks can do that...
Bad alignment (toe out) in the front, prolly won't cause the rear to squeal though.

 

Well, twice I've had noises, and twice it was a broken spring or some other crap wrong with those damn rear drums. I'd take off the drum first, those things take a crap an awful lot in cold weather...freeze up a lot of times.

 

It sounds like the same thing I get when I have been getting into some water/mud. It can cake up around the rear drums and when it dries it will make what sounds like a metal on metal screeching sound. I hit with a pressure washer and it takes care of the problem.

 

Alright. I'll take the drum off and see if there's anything stuck in there or broken. Should i check for anything loose in the suspension or anything?

 

Judging from the sound, I'm pretty sure its a rock or somethign that flipped up in there; I really do hate these damn drum brakes.. they have frozen upon me in cold weather; took all hell to break them free including baking them with a heat gun for 20 minutes. If only full L/S 4.1 Explorer rear axles were common around here
