It just has a pipe that comes off of the tube and angles down the air filter. It does the same thing as the cai only doesnt have the piece of plastic around it. Is this worth it? Or just get a drop in K&n? If the filters facing down is it more prone to water and such?

 

I bought mine off ebay, just be careful of water and keep it clean.

 

You could get that and then get you own piping for the rest of the intake. Finish it so it all looks the same.

 

I would save money for a real intake like a Volant.

 

I'm with Fddriver, get a real cold air intake with a sealed box. Everything else is just a waste of money.

 

But then you dont get that deep sound...

That mod will add sound? I dont see how but I will do that until I can afford a real intake.

 

If sound is all you are after, save up $160 for a Dynomax cat back exhaust kit.

 

I think an intake on a Ranger is a waste of money.

That's a waste of money too. I agree in that the stock setup is so optimized you cant squeeze any more out of the engine (as with nearly all of todays cars), But atleast with those they sell enough parts for the engine so you can make double and triple the stock output, so you would need a performance intake.

I have the K&N filter in my stock airbox because you can wash them, and on most vehicles they let less debris by the filter. I like to clean my filter out with oil changes.

 

Its not all I am after, I was hoping for the extra 1mpg and maybe a couple hp. I put on a flowmaster 44 and it is alot quieter than I thought it would be, probably since I just swapped it out with the stock muffler, no catback system or thicker pipe or anything. I can barely hear it from in the cab, and only starts to make sound around 3000rpm and up. I liked the idea of the cai because it adds a little extra sound (from what I have heard) and I like to be able to hear my engine, especially since its a standard.

 

Trust me, if you were getting 1mpg from that intake, then ford would be putting it on stock. OEM's spend MILLIONS for 1mpg, CAFE standards are harsh.

 

If you want to put a conw filter on you Ranger, you just need the adaptor that bolts onto your MAF. They are cheap and all over eBay.

I paid a few bucks for my MAC filter and stainless steel adaptor plate. Makes a cool sound, as for performance goes, it's still a dogg truck with a 3.0L.

If you want performance, start with a Volant CAI , then get performance headers and work your way out the *** with a Catback system. Slap a tuner and a whipple in there and you'll be laughing.

....But if you just want a cone filter, just get an adaptor. Should run you around $10 - $15 w/ shipping.

It was easy, it didn't add any sound, but I think I will leave it as is without the silencer on, since it lets more air flow through. More air flow can't hurt right? If anything it would help mpg and performance a TINY bit? Or if it is bad for the engine or anything let me know I will put it back to stock.

 

They sell little plates with a filter on eBay like Rolldog said.

I'd just remove the silencer and put that money towards headers, roller rockers, or a tuner.

assuming I keep the ol vulcan, I'll do headers, roller rockers, tuner, intake manifold, and throttle body mods before I do a CAI.

 

I have a Volant and love it. I got maybe 1-2 mpg, but I also have headers, cat-back exhaust, pulleys, etc.

 

I seriously doubt that, if so, fords fuel economy engineers don't know as much as you.

 

Just get a stock replacement filter that fits in the air box that flows better. If you get a filter that sits down in the engine bay you will end up loosing hp because you are pulling in hotter air.

 

You forget that they will use parts that are acceptable and that wont cost much. So no the OEM intake will not flow the best. I'm sure you could see like a 1mpg gain from an intake. Not the 5mpg and 12hp that they claim.

 

I picked up 1-2MPG with exhaust if I keep the engine in the exhaust's lower end working ranger (2000-3500), but that still doesnt offer maximum fuel economy (keeping turns under 2k and cruising at 55mph top speed).

 

I am with everyone on the Volant.. Volant is way nice.
