HELP, truck won't start!

please help. my truck is a 2001 4.0L auto 4x4 step side extra cab. it has 149,000 miles on it, and today i went to start it and it wont turn over. when i turn the key, its making a horrendous, almost metal on metal noise. i checked the oil and it has plenty, i tried pushing it and starting it with no luck (i'm not even sure that's possible in a auto)

my first thought is that the starter is busted. can i turn it over by hand with a socket or wrench? i need to get it home if possible. id rather not get it towed.

thanks in advance for any help!

it probably needs a starter or a flexplate, youll never get it started without the starter being an auto, unless it will start pushing it about 70mph. just pull the starter where it sits and inspect
