Ok so this summer i plan on painting my bumpers black and i wanted to know for those who have done it or anybody who knows what exactly should i do and what paint should i use?

 

what part? the whole front or just the valance? and on the rear, the plasitc upper piece or lower metal?

 

the chrome bumpers? the black/grey metal bumbers? or the plastic valance?

different technique to each of them. the metal ones with the satin black are the easiest to do. Chrome is harder to get ready, and the plastic is gonna take some special crap.

 

^ i dont think the plastic would be too bad. Alcohol, Sanding, Adhesion Promoter, Primer, Paint i would imagine. you might even be able to leave out the adhesion promoter.

 

well i just have the 94 xl so it has the grey metal bumper and in the back it has a somewhat black bumper but i want to make it darker and as for the valence i plan on taking that off and getting a 4x4 one in the future

 

I painted my valance with straight Krylon Fusion...No prep at all, just masked off the chrome and painted. Looks great still after 2 years.

Metal, I just rough it up with some sand paper, couple coats of paint and then clear coat.

 

buy the duplicolor bumper coating... we just did it on my friends truck and it looks SICK!!

clean the bumpers with acetone (get from local store).. srapy duplicor adhesion promoter... spray with bumper coating... 2 to 3 coats....
its pretty durable stuff... but let it cure for 2-3 days before stepping or scratching em!

 

Get a scuff pad at Home Depot or a paint store if you have one locally. (Scotchbrite pad or similar) A Grey one would be the best for what you are doing. Take that, some dishsoap and water and scuff the bumper up until its uniformly scuffed and non glossy. Rinse it off really well to get rid of all the soap and dry it off with some paper towels. Clean the surface with some wax and grease remover (or acetone if thats all you have, itll work but it might streak).

From there you would use your favorite paint. Now, is it automotive paint that you want to use? or a spray bomb? Spray bomb at this point would just involve masking off what you dont want black then painting it. Real car paint would be more expensive, and would require a few more steps in the actual application process. Its more durable though, but Im not sure exactly what you are after.

Theres a place for budget, and theres a place for a higher quality job. Neither is wrong, but its dependent on what you expect as an end result.

 

I painted my bumpers with bed liner made by plastikote, it looks great, is very tough and was relatively easy to apply, just make sure you prep the bumper properly(I ended up using an angle grinder and ground the entire surface to give it something to grip onto) otherwise the stuff will just peel off.
