Hey guys, i'm new to these forums and i'm having some problems with my truck this past week. I was driving about a mile and i noticed a high pitched whining noise coming from my engine compartment, so when i got back i lifted the hood to see if i couldn't find the problem i know when i turn my steering wheel i will get a groan or moaning noise, and my question is that could it be the belt or belt tensioner causing the whining/grinding noise and my power steering to mess up? Any help would be very much appreciated!!

 

Oh sorry i forgot to mention i have a 1997 Ford Ranger 3.0 L V6 Manuel Transmission

 

does it only make the whining noise when turning? it sounds like your power steering pump might be going.

 

No they seem to be completely seperate, i had it parked and put it in neutral and i revved the engine up to 2000 rpm and thats when the whining noise started, it seems to only happen when accelerating.

 

I have this EXACT problem right now!!!
Its a really really high pitched loud screem, and it occurs right after 2000rpm. I replaced my belt, and my idler pully and neither worked!

 

Greeaat... do you have any ideas?

 

U test the alternator to see if it may be going out

 

No i have not tested the alternator yet, i didn't think it made that type of noise.

 

You have a bad pulley somewhere could be alt power steering pump or could be both also dont rule out your water pump. Pull your belt off and give everything a spin see if anything is hard to turn.

 

Ok thanks i appreciate all of your posts! I also had a question about socket sizes on these pulleys and belt tensioner assebly, do you know what they are? I have been trying to find them in my Haynes manual but it doesn't seem to have it anywhere. I ask because i don't have much money as i am in college, and would like to get it done right the first time. Thank you!

 

it could also be your fan clutch. mine whistled when it went bad.

 

Im not sure on bolt sizes but you can go to your local auto parts store and tell them that your trying to find out the size of your bolts they should have tools for you to use.

 

Ok as i was on my way to the parts store my truck wasn't whining it started to make a ticking noise, i checked my oil and if anything i have to much oil in there and it sounds like it is coming from the drivers side, and yet again it is faster as i accelerate.
