Icon10 01 explorer 5.0 i CAN get!

ok i just met this guy, hes helping me sell a van i got sittin around the house, well we got to talking and i told him how i was planning on building my motor. he says to me "well why not put a 5.0 in it out of one of my explorers?" i was in shock, he offerd to help me put it in if i just buy motor and tranny. i never wanted to do the swap now but i have a chance to now and do it cheaper then building my motor!

my one question to you guys that know your V8 stuff is what problems will i come across if i was to do the 01 5.0 V8 swap?

low miles motor and tranny btw

Assuming that the EX is also 2WD, most of it would be relatively straightforward with this combo of donor and donee. The biggest problem you will need to resolve is PATS since your Ranger does not have it and the Explorer does. It is possible to transplant the Explorer PATS parts into the Ranger but it takes a bit of wiring. Either that or cal PATS out using a flash programmer.

Do it. If you get everything lined up as best you can, I dont see why you couldnt do it in a weekend. We did mine almost in a saturday afternoon. Granted it was a 2wd, but still. You love it!

seems like it, hes got a ton of rangers sitting at his house, parts trucks and all 93-97.

would i need to regear for 33s with that 5.0?

but still if i cant pass e-testing then what good is the motor in my truck? i have a last resort if i HAD to get around it.

and gas miliage would be better wouldnt it?

What gears do you have now? I have 35s with 3.73s with a 5.4 and its not too bad, you should be fine with 33s, 5.0 and 3.73s if thats what you have. You should pass emissions since its a newer motor as long as you retain all the emissions equipment. Depending on what mileage your getting now you should get 17ish with the Expo motor

I say do it just for the pure sound alone. I hate having a truck that sounds like a mad hornet when I first fire it up. I love my little Ranger but when i hear a big V8 powered truck with exhaust drive by, my heart sinks a little.

yeah i guess it might pass.

and i have 3.55s so im thinking 33s or even 35s wouldnt hurt.

how would i get rid of the PATS issue? what problems does it cause?

PATS can be removed at a dealership, or I think with a flash tuner... If you don't disable it then your truck won't run.

what are the details of the emissions testing? depending on the strictness of the rules you might be ok.

Many times the rule is simply that the new engine must be of the same manufacture year or newer then the vehicle and all emissions systems hooked up.

If I remember right from when they had Emissions testing in MN all they did was check your fuel filler neck (something about leaded fuel), slide a mirror under the car to verify you had a cat and then stick the probe in the tail pipe and let the car idle. They never popped the hood and only put the car on the rollers if it failed the test at idle.
