ive noticed that when i have my O/D off ''when the light comes on'' i have more pick up lot more , which makes since

but will it cause any harm at all driving around with it off all the time

OD is an extra gear. No it wont harm anything other than MPG. Its kind of like leaving my truck in 4th gear and never going into 5th. I would just run with it on. If you need to go down a gear or two the tranny will do it for you. Just floor it. The reason its there is to turn it off when towing a heavy load since the tranny will "hunt" between gears sometimes and cause the tranny to overheat. Another reason its there is to turn off while in around town so your tranny has one less gear to shift into.

 

it only does anything at highway speeds its like a 6th gear around town wont make a difference,
i turn my o/d off all the time on the highway to pass or climb big hills the only thing it will hurt is your mpg's

 

Also it wont give you any more take off running without it.

 

easy thing you can do to gain a little more pulling power on hills is as you start going up touch your brake just enough to trip the brake lights switch which will unlock the torque converter and give you a few more rpm say 300-500. I have the 5spd auto and the truck can't pull its self up a 6% grade in overdrive and converter locked. unlock it and it will hold 65-70 with out getting into the throttle. so its not a dramatic as turning the overdrive off or dropping a whole gear but enough to get me up a hill with out slowing down. this can also be done with the overdrive off. but the transmission computer wont leave it unlocked in 4th probably because it doesn't have enough of a load on the engine/transmission, but i have found it wont leave it unlocked in 4th pulling a jayco pop up camper trailer up the same hill but that's enough weight to slow me down.

The torque converter normally locks at or just after 45. that is an easy way to check if your converter is locking. just touch the brake and your tachometer should rise that 500 rpm

 

Yea our Silverado tranny overheated because of that. I learned that lesson the hard way.

 

but then its time for upgrades!!

Yea being 12 I just need something to keep my young mind entertained, so I drive a standard. Autos are like watching paint dry, they just aren't any fun.

 

I agree but there is a time and a place for a manual. Truck? Meh. Sports car? Hell yeah. But if you have a fast enough car it gets to the point where you just can't shift as fast as an auto. My buddy's 06 GTO auto ran a 12.5 at 108 in the quarter. That was before the cam. A similarly equipped manual 06 GTO pulled a tad slower. Crappy driver? Nah. It just takes time to shift.

 

Yea I understand that. I just have a flaming passion for clutches and shifters. Even tiptronic transmissions don't work for me even if they have paddles on the steering wheel.

 

I won't even touch the manual vs. Auto debate,
but seriously, sell your truck and get one with a freakin auto already. If I had an auto I'd straight up trade you transmissions, hell I'd even install it for you.
