So i got some free fog lights for my truck off an explorer from c4c. I also picked up a switch out of a 94 explorer. Now the switch plugged right in and has power. I checked all my fused in both fuse boxes and they are fine. i turned the lights on on low beams and hit the switch and nothing happened the lights wont light up. so what else can i check for i am at a loss of what else to do? also the light bulbs them selfs are fine. so any help would be great.

I'm not real familiar with fog lights on older RBVs, pics may help.

 

im not sure what you want me to take pic of there is just a fog light with a wire and a plug on the end and then the plug for the fog lights on the chassis. tell me what you want pics of and i will gladly take them

 

does your truck have a wiring harness for the fogs?

 

Last warning. Knock off the crap. Everybody.

 

Do the fogs only use one wire each? meaning that they are grounded though their housings. if so then you need to make sure your fog light housings are grounded.
Its hard to understand what you have going on over there with out seeing it.

whats this switch plugging into? how many prongs are on the back of this switch?
how many wires are going to the bulbs in the fog lights?

 

You are probably missing a relay.

 

im a little lost on what you are doing.. Are you wiring up to factory wiring? If so does you truck have the harness and is there power to the plugs on the harness?

I second that if you are using factory wiring.

 

Factory foglamps use a 20A foglamp fuse and a foglamp relay, both in the underhood box. Your truck might not have those if it was originally built without fogs.

alright well im pretty sure i have everything ok heres the pics

to start i have to plugs for the fog lights on the bottom of my rad support.


here is the fog light plug it is pinned on the same side and plugs right in


here is the fog lights they are still in there old housing

The wiring harness is pinned the same way as the plug and goes right in and lights up the switch when the lights are on.



where is the relay that i might have missed? i thought i checked everything. in my fuse box there is a spot for the fuse i moved my fuel pump fuse into that spot to test since i dont have a small one at the moment. Unless im really missing something im pretty sure my truck is wired for fog lights......

 

i just checked the bulbs by touching bat and they lit up so thats not the problem

 

i guess first id take a test light to the connectors on the rad support to see if they are even getting power.

 

^My suggestion too...get a test light. it's a must for these sorta things. See if your getting any juice at all down on the truck side of the bulb plugs. See if there's any juice at the fuse box where your relay and fuse are supposed to go, etc..

I agree with Christian, Bob, and the others...I think your missing the relay and the fuse and your box probably isn't pinned for them. At least that's the case with some of these newer trucks. Might have to make your fog wiring a hybrid of stock and aftermarket stuff.

i know i have the metal contacts for the small fuse but is the relay just one of those big fuses?

 

a relay is a black box lookin' thing. sometimes white in the OEM's. 4 or 5 pin.


the big fuse looking things are called maxi fuses and some have a breaker switch ontop of them.

 

 

ok you guys are right i am missing that i moved my ac on over and the other fuse so i had everything for the fogs and now my switch wont light up in the green spot

the metal slots are there for the relay i just need to go buy one now.

 

well i got them working i went out and dicked around with the relay and fuse put them in and out a couple times to clean up the contacts and i must have a loss wire in my switch. but i got them working. no i just need to drill 2 big *** holes in my bumper to mount them that should be fun. but i need to buy a relay so i can have my ac back but i shouldnt need it that for a while. thanks for the help guys learned a little more about wiring.

glad it was something as easy as a relay.

 

find that loose wire or whatever in your dash...don't think you want it going ablaze...

dunno how you'll drill a hole that big unless you got a big *** hole saw. the term 'cut' sounds alot better. lol. Would those be the same fogs in like 93-97 ranger fog valences?

 

So all you did was put a relay and a fuse in the box and the fogs worked?

im not sure if they are the same but i will just treat a valance off so i need to figure out some way to mount them in my bumper
