i was just wondering what the purpose of that thing is? Looks? or there some sort of advantage to having something stick that far up on the front of a truck?

Damn Donny, its about time you got a pic of it on your truck like that! I only now notice just how much taller that stinger is than the one I have. Now - git 'r done and mounted. Lets see some nice welds since you'll be using a MIG.

I've heard a few reasons to the purpose behind a stinger. A few would involve a front-end roll-over. If this should happen, the stinger (should) not only keep you from rolling end over end directly onto you're roof, but rather divert the vehicle to one of its sides. The other would be to keep the front of the vehicle, where the radiator and such is, from being crushed.

Isn't that what a normal bumper does, far better then any of these stinger styles? Can't replace some good cold bar's with a couple tubes

sticks to far out, its too tall and too vertical. Make a new shorter stinger hoop and connect it to the main bumper not those extensions and it would be sweet.

more like this.
