it says it will weld thicker metal with flux core wire.

i like welding with gas but i am gonna play with it and see what is better for thicker pieces.

Flux core is bad @$$, it flows SOOOOOO easy & I love it. Good find! FLux core isn't that dirty, no where near as dirty as stick. It looks ugly until you pop the 'cover' off and it looks really clean.

looks like the one I have. i got it from lowes also but it came with a cart.

On mine the air fitting coming out the back is straight and it gets pinched by the bottle when the bottle is sitting in the hole provided with the cart. I need to swap it for a 90 degree someday. The hole is also too small for some bottles. Whenever I get the bottle filled, they swap it with the closest avaiable size. Some of them are too big around to fit in the cart. Ihad to make some cuts to enlarge it. Now some bottles are kind of floppy sitting in there.

Not sure what cart you are gonna buy, but I would use the welder to make one if i did it over again.

To answer a previous question: flux and gas are redundant. The purpose of both is to displace oxygen so you melt the metal but don't burn it up (oxidize it). Flux will also help remove contaminants to a certain extent, as will deoxidizers in the wire. I use ER70S-6 for the extra deoxidizers it has since I weld on well used metal surfaces that are sometimes pitted and difficult to get really, really clean (like recycled suspension brackets).

That's a nice piece, Mark! That's the kind of unit I want to replace my Harbor Freight MIG. I have gas and everything already from a local supply company so I'm set with that.

You can weld thicker with that with gas -- you just need to get it set up right and do multiple passes. You can weld thicker in a pass with flux I've heard -- but I like to see what I'm doing and flux sucks for that, lol. I can't see the weld pool well (or at all sometimes) with flux. When I can see it, I'm much better off "reading" it to know how fast I should go -- I'm not an experienced weldor so I need that feedback.

The better machines are much less touchy on wire speed as it tracks the heat selection you make such that it's fine tuning rather than a complete change of setting with different currents like mine.
