RANGER PICTURES! The possibly long task of making her run.
 

Ok, they aren't with the Ranger out and about, but still, IT'S PICTURES!

Made a little headway on it by taking the alternator, intake, coil pack, and most of the bolts off the passenger side valve cover (EXCEPT ONE!).

I also took the hood off. I do not recommend doing this by yourself. Thankfully, I have super secret awesome powers that made it easy.

So with the alternator out of the way, I started removing bolts and stuff off the intake. I got them all, but when I tried to pull it up, the coil pack bracketry got in my way:

So then, I try to get a socket down in there with two 6 inch extensions, but I just couldn't get an angle on it.

I wasn't going to bust my knuckles (yet) trying to get something that's only partially in the way off, so instead I just took the coil pack off, and bent the bracket up so I could pull the intake off.

Got the intake off, and looked down in the head. Looks like it could use a little cleaning:

Next, I pulled all the bolts except for one off the head, and then realized I went a little too far. I had forgotten to take the passenger side valve cover off. So the next task was to do that. I got all the bolts but ONE off, and only because I can't get to it without moving the big black thing (I am guessing air conditioning thing, or some heater thing, I have no idea). You can see the nut on the right side of this picture just under all the other bracketry:

So, after two hours, I decided to call it a day. I think I have an idea on how to take that last nut off, but I am going to wait until next weekend because I don't want to get frustrated. Those two hours were probably the least frustrating times I have ever had with my Ranger, so I want to keep this project just like that.

Until I get the head up, I can't be 100% sure, but it seems as if a lifter got stuck, the valve was down all the way, and the piston rammed it when the engine was at about 3000-3500 RPMs.

Alright, so I got no pictures from today. But, I did start working on it some more.

I was able to pull the drivers side manifold, and 2 out of the 6 head bolts, as well as the power steering pump, and the rest of the intake, the push rods, and the rocker arm on the drivers side. I also priced out a full set of lifters and a valve, and I still got my fingers crossed that the piston is ok, even though I highly doubt it. If that's the case, the motor is getting pulled out to get rebuilt completely.

The only reason the head didn't come off today was because A. It rained like a son of a ***** today, even though it was like 80 degrees, and B. I had to buy the T-55 to take the bolts out, and when I finished pulling the first bolt, the bit broke out of the socket attachment it's in. I was still able to use it, but me being a dumb ass, I dropped it while attempting to take the third bolt out, and after pawing around on the ground for 30 ****ing minutes, I couldn't find it.

Tomorrow, I'll be buying yet ANOTHER ****ing bit, and going at it yet again.

Well, my dad finally got bored enough to force me into working on the Ranger. Believe me, I was really reluctant. But he called and said that he wanted to do something, and since it was hot we decided to sweat our asses off on the Ranger instead of the couch. So I ran up to the parts store and bought not one, but TWO T-55's. Just in case I broke yet another one.

We finished pulling the head, and we found that the piston is fine. It did come up, and it did hit the valve, but it didn't do a damn thing to it to cause it to be replaced. In fact, the spot that hit the valve is a lot cleaner then the rest of the piston. I made sure to check it thoroughly, and it's FINE! The valve is completely ruined, and my theory of the lifter being stuck open checked out.

Now, all I need is gaskets, lifters, one exhaust valve, oil and antifreeze, and it should be running great. So in two weeks (or when I get paid from one of my side jobs, whichever comes first), I'll get that stuff. My guess is probably about $200 and a case of Coors light. I plan on cleaning both the heads really good as well as the intake, and blowing out any debris I can out of the block.

I didn't get any pictures today because I forgot my camera and because I figured the piston was screwed and I wouldn't be in such a good mood, lol. I did find a HUGE yellow jacket nest behind one of the jump seats, though. Not sure how they got in as the truck was shut tight. I also found some nasty food that had been in there since the day it broke down (thankfully, in a ziploc bag that was in a big bag). Needless to say, dry heaving did happen. Nasty stuff that smells even remotely foul does that to me.

I found my last R/F sticker, so I put it on the Heavy Chevy. Hopefully I offend nobody with it. If any locals ask, I'll say it's definitely NOT a site for Ford Rangers.

I believe it was a sandwich. The ziploc was a white ball of fuzz, and there was a nasty brown liquid in it about halfway up. Apparently, turkey and ham make a liquid that turns almost poop brown after sitting in a truck that has been through a lot of hot days for almost a year, LOL!

It's funny, the day before I left for the trip, I detailed the entire interior. It still looks immaculate, but it's definitely in need of some help again in the scent and insect department.
