F250 and Cattle Trailer

South Texas is experiencing one of the hottest and driest summers ever recorded. This afternoon I helped my dad haul off a load of damn fine animals: 3 cows and 8 healthy calves. It's kind of depressing selling perfectly fine animals just because you can't feed all of them in the present time... but you can't let the starve either.

On the flip side, I had a chance to see how the F250 towed something a little more substantial than a 19' Bay Boat. As of tonight, I don't have any official weight numbers, but I'll estimate somewhere around 7500-8,000 lbs.

The truck did great going to the auction barn. Overdrive was not very effective, especially when bucking a head wind. Droping down to 4th was so much better. 4th gear brought my engine speed up to about 2750 at 65mph and yielded a solid 8.5mpg out of my 5.4L. I expected it to be difficult to get up to highway speeds, but the V8 proved very capable motivating ~ 15,000GCWR.

One thing I cannot say enough good things about is the stability of of the F250 while towing. Even when towing live weight like animals moving around, the trailer never tried to wag the truck like it did to our half ton. Towing was actually enjoyable and not a white-knuckle experience! Also, the integrated trailer brake controller is fantastic.

Enough talking, on with a few pics...

Here we are ready to go to the auction. The truck is squatting a little.

Look closely at the spare- it's a LT235/75R15 BFG Mud Terrain... off the Ranger before I upgraded to 32s

And here's us back at the house hosing out all the poo in the trailer!

Pray for rain for us South Texas folk!
(Then maybe I'll post some pics of the truck stuck to the doors in mud...)

Always nice to test the truck out and see what it can do.

Same here it was mid 60's today and rain. I was wearing a hoody and pants all day.

But nice truck, my f150 handles 9,000lbs with no issues, so I would think the F250 would be able to handle it also with no issues
