Wheeling in Wharton 1-1-09 Photos

We had a good meet today, it was a small group of trucks, but it worked out pretty well. There were a bunch of different groups out riding, so we shared the trails a bit. This was actually a good thing since none of us had to play the part of icebreaker.

We wheeled for about 3 hours, not too long, but enough to find the quarter mile of mud and have some fun. Once again, the quarter mile of mud was more like the quarter mile of lakes. We all got stuck once and Earl ended up breaking a hub on his truck on his way back... this was a good thing; I was hungry. My Bronco continues to have problems with the oil pump going bad, hopefully when it gets warmer we'll be able to fix that.

More photos to come from the other guys.

Jen followed me down in my Ranger in case there were any problems with the Bronco... there were problems.

The two trucks on the way down; the Bronco did not want to start back up... perhaps because of the sh*tty parking job.

My Bronco next to Don's Bronco. His lockers aren't vented yet, so his truck sat on the sidelines with the my Ranger and Earl's truck and trailer.

Pace had the first stuck of the day, he did a damn good job of it too.

Herm got stuck, then I got stuck, but I don't have any photos of those. Each time, it was Earl to the rescue, he's a great guy to bring wheeling with you.

Earl tried the middle of the hole, he made it out with no problem. The Bronco made it through without a problem as well, 35's are a wonderful thing.

Later on, Earl got stuck.

There was ice all over the place, once again I was happy not to have to play the part of icebreaker.

I didn't get too many pics, but here they are... I rode with Earl, so I could only get out to take pics when I wasn't driving his truck to pull someone out, or he was nice enough to stop somewhere where there wasn't 1' of water. Videos are still uploading, and will be in the next post.

John and I

Again...

John's Ranger with the back tire about 1" off the ground... I think he was puckering!

Trying to flex it out, but I rant out of hill, still have another 6" or so of droop.

Group Shot of trucks right before we left..

The Smurf going through a bypass..

The last obstacle.. After Earl pulled a stuck jeep, and the ranger out, he broke his hub (and maybe something else), so we headed back.

Earl with his hip waders... SO GLAD HE HAD THOSE!!

I'll post up again in a minute with the videos...

Don

I liked this photo alot, so I played around with photoshop to reduce the noise level:

Then I went further to make the trucks stand out:

Don if you, or anyone wants a fullsize image of the fullsizers, let me know.

Venting isn't really the correct terminology... I installed ARB lockers in my front and rear differentials. ARB lockers use air pressure, 90PSI to be specific, to provide the force to actually lock the differential on demand. Because of that, you need an air fitting drilled through your outer differential housing to attach the air line to. I haven't gotten the air tank, solenoids, and air lines all bought, much less installed, so therefore I have a fitting on the top of my differential that should have a sealed air line going to, but instead only has a rubber vacuum cap on it. If I were to go through water that covered the differential, and water were to leak past that vacuum cap and into the locker itself, I could ruin my brand new Lockers, which aren't cheap, or at the very least require a full re-build which is quite time consuming. I just wasn't willing to take that chance with all the logs, sticks, and today ice that was floating in the water just waiting to pull off those vacuum caps.

-

EDIT:

Here is someone else's picture showing the airline, and the differential fitting:

I just have the brass fitting, and it's open to air right now (except for the rubber vacuum cap).

Don you should install the air lines and just run them into the engine compartment. With just a rubber vent cap on them they can still get water in them this time a year with all of the snow.

I hear you... If it goes too much longer I'll do that. I was hoping to have a tank, and just be able to fill the tank with my shop air to run the lockers, but time and money haven't been on my side lately...

There is plenty of places where 2wd is all you need then there are spots where 40's, 4wd, and lockers front and back are not enough.

If by smoker you mean your F350....they don't do well down in Wharton. The mud just goes on and on. Getting one of those stuck and you would get stuck are near impossible to get out. There are places in Wharton where trucks with tractor tires could get stuck.
