speedometer guage bouncing

I have 93 ranger xlt all stock wheels and I have noticed that the speedometer seems to be floating when driving. Example 70 mph it will bounce to 65 or 75. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this or is the speedometer shot? It has 276,000 miles on it.
Thanks in advance

Similar trouble with my '94. Just sporadic. Sometime it jumps up to 120mph when I start driving...then right back down to true speed. Irritating.

from what i've read on here and other forums, the actual speedo in the cluster needs replaced. if you are on rps, dj224ranger has fixed this problem before. look up his posts and you should be able to find it.
