1996 Ford Ranger 2.3 timing belt broke while driving

Hey guys, this is my first post on here, seems to help a lot of people and reading others has helped me in the past but this time is a little different.
I was driving over a bridge and ole faithful just died, tried cranking it and it kinda tried to but never did. Turned out the timing belt broke. Ive got it most of the way torn down but there are a few catches, the first being the dreaded crank pulley nut. To keep the pulley from rotating i just stuck it in first and put the ebrake on, not sure if thats a bad way to go about it, and even with a pretty good size breaker bar and a cheater pipe it wouldnt give. And ive soaked it plenty in pb blaster. The other issue is just about everything is covered in old oil from a valve cover gasket leak and i cannot locate the guiding marks(other than the one for the crank pulley.) I would like to pull it all out and clean it that way but ive never done such before and dont wanna make putting it back into time any more difficult/confusing. Also, any tips or tricks for putting it back into time would be appreciated. Thanks for any help in advance!

Welcome to the forum

You will need to just clean up the engines front cover(under timing belt) to see the marks, no way around that.

Look here for locations of marks: https://www.ranger-forums.com/sohc-2...diagram-76148/

And you are doing the crank bolt correctly for manual trans, in 1st gear wheels blocked.

One other thing you can try, Put trans in NEUTRAL!!!
Put breaker bar on the bolt and turn crank so bar is against the ground or vehicle frame.
Then bump/use the starter motor, it can often provide enough torque to break bolt free.

You have to do this with automatic transmissions
