2.3 pinging

Lori's Mazda B2500 2.3 is pinging bad when run on regular 87 octane. I don't know what the compression ratio is on this truck but she said it has done it since new. Is this a common complaint with the 2.3s? Would switching to a different spark plug help? I'm trying to familiarize myself with these engines - if it were mine, it would get the 550 hp Pontiac 455HO in the shop... :silly:

I will eventually be adding a K&N filter as well. I don't know what the hop-up market is on these yet because i haven't had much time to search the forums.

Thanks!!

Not worth your time hoping it up.

When does it ping? Does it run smoothley otherwise?

MydnightMyst 11-12-2005 11:23 AM

Only on acceleration, from mild to heavy.

You say it has done it since new?

Mine does ping a little right around 60mph, if I am driving steady at 60, then go up a hill and keep the same speed.

Does not do it anytime else.

How many miles on the truck, and since new do you mean new 0 miles or new when you got it?

MydnightMyst 11-15-2005 08:04 PM

Since 0 miles. The truck has about 37,000 now. Lori - now my fiance :biggthump - had bought it new and she says it's been doing it the entire time unless she puts in plus or premium fuel. I just don't think this is normal...

Like I said, if she were to let me, that Pontiac 455 would find a home here. LOL

Or there's a 1993 Mustang Cobra-R in our apt. complex that has gone to crap... Those 17" wheels and 5.0/5 speed would be right at home... :slaphappy

I know this is a little unrelated since I got a 4L, but mine pings on acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear. I dunno why but it's going into the shop tomorrow so we're mentioning it to them too. It's been doing it ever since we bought it (used).

There are two different methods to fix the probable cause for this problem.

Decarbonization using Seafoam

Decarbonization using water

Search for them...I've covered them so many times it's getting old. It worked wonders on my 2000 model 2.5L. I run 87 all the time now.
