2.5L MPG impressed me...

I have had my truck for two years now, but just recently took it on its first out-of-state trip from NC to AL. I was pleasantly suprised by the gas mileage it got. From NC to GA it averaged 28 MPG. I know people with Duratecs are getting in the 30s, but for a mostly cast iron SOHC 8 valve engine dating back to the '70s, I think my 2.5 did really well. My mileage dropped to about 25 MPG from GA to AL, but that was because of bad traffic in Atlanta and driving around in Birmingham (where I spent my two weeks in AL). That is still pretty good though.

It's all about the inlet air temperature, folks. I have the IAT resistor mod, with a potentiometer instead of a resistor. A potentiometer is like the volume **** on your stereo. The more you turn the ****, the more resistance it applies to the circuit. The range is 1 ohm to 100 thousand ohms. Let me explain what kind of difference it makes, since I just got back from having beer and chicken at lunch, topped with a little bowl of my favorite herb, and I'm in just the right mood to expain something;

When I have my IAT resisted to maximum level - 100K ohms, which sends a signal to the computer that reads out as 32 degrees fahrenheit, I get an average of 13-19 mpg.

When I have my IAT resisted at minimum level - 1ohm - It reads out only a few degrees lower than that actual air temperature.

If it's cold, and I have my IAT maxed out, I get great gas mileage - around 20-22 mpg. If it's hot, and I have my IAT maxed out - I get around 12-13 mpg.

I took a trip from Georgia to Arkansas recently, and on each leg I tested my IAT mod.

Going - I averaged 19 mpg, but was satisfied with the power-at-hand. The torque was always there, and never lagged when I expected it to move.

Coming - I averaged 25mpg, but that included lots of frustrating slow acceleration moments.

I have a 2.5L in my truck also and get around 25 to 27 or so. I am curious, someone said they have a 20 gallon fuel tank!!!

How did you get a 20 gallon tanK!?!?!?!? Mine is only 10 gal or so. Is this a mod we can put on?

Anyway, I've got an exhaust manifold leak I need to fix (anyone got a spare manifold?) but once that is fixed I'm hoping my power and milage goes up a tiny bit.

Any tips on getting 28?

Go on the highway as much as you can I guess. I wasn't even trying that hard...I was passing people on hills and stuff, lol. I kept my speed around 70-75 MPH though except when traffic prevented it or when I was passing someone.

My 2.5 5 speed ranger got in the 28 neighborhood consistently when i was commuting to school. (600 miles a week highway) but unfortunately a bad O2 sensor is killing my milage as im only getting around 16 or so.

ya, I just got a 2001 with a 2.5L and I got about 23.5mpg driving locally. Just driving 5 miles or so to work and back every day, around town. Its also a manual, but I didn't know how to drive stick till this car, so its not the smoothest of operation lets say.

The IAT mod is fooling the computer, which is causing a lean condition.

Don't beleive me? Hook up an air fuel ratio guage.

Its not a good mod.
