Cold Temp gauge

Cold Temp gauge
My temp gauge is all the way at the bottom when idling, but kicks up to normal when driving. I'm noticing a very slight leak and hissing sound from a juncture where 4 hoses connect, (just under the air intake hose). Can't find what that is in my Haynes manual, and is that the issue or a thermostat prob.? Obviously, any hissing sound is not good, but before I go out in this subzero temp., I wanna' be sure to fix everything...know what I mean?

Thanks for the input guys....replaced the thermostat, (worst sub $10 part I've ever replaced in my life), still having the issue. I've been told that the Ranger's have an inheritant problem with the temp. sending unit.....it was only 7$ at O'Reilly's, so I bought one.........now I just gotta find where the heck it's located at.
