Engine Shake and Low idle

Hi,
I have a 95 Ford Ranger 4x4 2.3L 5-speed. Trying to figure out something. Can anyone tell me why the engine will shake and go into a low idle almost a stall? Thanks. I'm trying my best to get this thing running right. Thanks again

I actually adjusted the idle screw but the idle will still drop within a stall in about 30 secs. of idling

I'll have to take a pic tomorrow it's dark out right now and it's parked at my grandparents. I do know that when looked up in repair manuals that 93-94 are seperate from the 95+ engines. Not sure why. I was kinda wanting to do an engine swap cause I have a buddy with a 2.3 94' engine with low miles. But I don't think it will happen. Plus I don't want to fool with doing it.

And yeah. 4cyl. (2.3L) 4x4

Could the timing belt have jumped a tooth?

Suspected this was a possibility. Was afraid to think about it to much. I pulled the timing belt cover off and the timing belt is cracky and real loose. If it hasn't jumped time I do know it needs replaced. But I have no clue how to mark my place and put one on without really getting it out of time.

Do you think the fuel filter would cause this. Didn't get a chance to inspect the fuel filter. If so I'll change the fuel filter and run what you stated above.

well mine was idling bad and shaking when i would start it so i bought an additive from autozone and put a full tank of supreme and it made a noticeable difference.I also quit buying cheap sand****** gas because it kills your motor. Put shell or exxon or a big name.

i've had the same problem since my engine swap... (2.3)

anything below 1000 rpm, it shakes the whole truck

not much, but enough to be annoying.

i've got a hunch it is the timing belt.....i may have put it on one tooth behind

if i turn the distributor to advance the timing....it smooths out noticeably but idles at 1000 with the idle screw all the way out

Generally, aside from gunk/ carbon build up, it's going to be lack of either fuel or air getting to the cylinders. Change the fuel filter, clean/ change the air filter. You could try seafoam or the like to try and clean things up a bit, but it just sounds like it's dirty.

Thanks. I was thinking about it today. I've been thinking it was something electrical the whole time. Which it was. Got a repair manual and turned out to plug wires were crossed. But its still doing what it did before so I'm thinking it's the fuel. Cause my dad just drove this truck everyday. Never did anything to it but put gas in it and go. I've replaced the regular stuff. Coil packs, plugs, wires, air filter, oil, oil filter, and now I'll try some high oct. gas and a new fuel filter and see what it does. Thanks again guys. I'll give you an update on what it does. Keep your opinions coming
