Any clue what this is and where it goes?

When I was removed my pcv valve yesterday to check it out, etc I noticed this just sitting where the valve cover meets the engine on the driver side of the engine. Don't know what it is, where it goes, or how long it's been laying there. Hoping someone out there knows what it is and where it goes. Here are a couple attached pictures:

It's 1997 Ranger XL with a 2.3L SOHC in it.

Not ringing any bells for me

Maybe it was a cover for a new part previous owner installed, like a protective cover to be remove on installation, and it got pulled off and then forgotten.

If engine is running OK I would just keep in the back of my mind in case something crops up

Could just be random road debris that got stuck in the engine.

If it came off something on the truck I sure can't find it. So, for now I just ignore it, but keep it mind type thing...

Mystery solved - it's the cover/rubber-button from my flash light. Attached is a picture showing it missing...

I wouldn't feel too bad - it came off my flashlight and I didn't realize it until today - lol...
Flashlight still works just fine, but the button/cap is long gone. At least I think it is. I'm pretty sure I chucked in the trash a while back. It's a bright flashlight that I've had around for years.
