Bad engine mounts
Welcome to the forums.
There are a few ways to check the condition of motor mounts.
First I'll post some links to various videos in no particular order.-
Here is a video for 2.3L Ford Rangers-
This one talks about the different quality of aftermarket mounts-
If you have a manual transmission like I do, and one or more of your mounts are bad/broken ( 2 engine mounts and 1 trans mount) you can have several possible issues, some of which are covered in the videos but I'll list a couple here since my Ranger has them.
1) Excessive engine, shifter movement especially when pulling out, letting out the clutch or even coasting then accelerating.
2) Vibration: Such as the engine, grill, inner door and dash panels even at idle. It could also be caused by other issues but bad or broken mounts might be the problem. This can be noticed with either automatic or manual transmissions.
I've had both issues since I bought my Ranger ~3 yrs ago. Unfortunately the driver side mount for the 2000 Ranger 2.5L is discontinued and everyone sells the passenger side mount for both sides now even though they're not the same mount. So I just baby my truck until I can find the right set.
I hope this helps at least a little bit until more people post more information for you.
I didn't watch all the videos to completion, but they should have some decent info for you.
Note: One of the vids shows the guy basically tearing apart the front end to get to the mounts. I'm not sure but I don't remember ever hearing about that method ( At least for a Ford Ranger). I'm not saying he's wrong, but it doesn't sound right to me. But I could absolutely be wrong.
