looking at buying a 2.5

guy at work has a reg cab auto 2.5 1999 ranger he offered to me for 1300bucks has 100k I was wondering some of the pros and cons and also the MPG these get in town and on the highway. The reason im intrested is my tahoe sucks gas big time and in NY i can only drive my stang 5-7months out of the year. Are these motors good for high miles? also he said it needs ball joints but from what im reading thats common, is it a difficult job?

thanks ahead

My little brother has a Early '01 XL 2wd reg cab w/ the 2.5. He gets great mileage....he told me like 25ish highway...20ish city. Granted, he's only got like 30k on it. It's a workhorse of a little motor.

I have the 2.3 in my Ranger and the 2.5 is identical to it with the exception of the crankshaft stroke. Parts listings are identical on both engines. Guys are regularly getting 300,000+ with this motor. I'm one of them!

And yes a stated above, it's not unreasonable to get 25mpg's out of them all day.

i have the same exact truck with 154K on it and i love it. Ive owned it since new and the only thing that ever went on it other than maintenance items was the resistor for the fan speed (twice) i did usual maintenance items such as tires and brakes and ive been downright **** about oil changes at 2500 miles and tranny service at 30-33K
i also put a set of front sway bar links about 90K. I would definately recommend the truck cause mine has been abused and its never let me down. it is a bit tight for long trips but id get in it today and drive clear cross country cause its so reliable. the mileage is good and it hauls alot for a little truck so dont be afraid
PS i was offered $1750 for mine a month ago and i turned it down

just stay away from water, my 2.3L had something like 148k on it when i hyrdolocked it.

before that it was a really strong motor.

now i have a 2.5L out of a 99 with 8k on it.

the work truck at my dads shop is a 98 with the 2.5L and it has a little over 500k on it.

I have a 1999 with the 2.5L 5spd in it and I love the truck. It is reliable, but I get crappy gas mileage(about 15mpg). I just sea foamed the engine today, so hopefully that should help out with the gas mileage. The majority of people get good mpgs with theres so I would recommend the truck.
