Power boost

So I have a 98 Ranger xlt with the 4clyndr 2.5L with almost 130k on it. My question is what are some quick small things I can do to get a little more kick out of it. I will not be on a track or anything. Just want a little more power and maybe some better fuel millage.

well 1st better fuel mileage and more power are 2 things you wont get at the same time. you can put full exhaust on it and maybe get more power. but with a 4banger you kinda already have all your gonna get if you dont wanna spend alot of money.

5.0 swap. Thats the best bang for your buck.

5.0 swap isn't the answer for everything.

You can change the exhaust manifold out for a header, exhaust, ud pulley and tune but nothing will have a dramatic effect on its own. I say drive it and leave it stock because nothing is cheap.

Lower it, drop in high flow filter, cat back 2.5" exhaust. Thats about it without serious money and/or work.

the 92?-2001 2.3 and 2.5 limas already have headers on them from the factory.

I'm sure the aftermarket ones flow a bit more than stock.

When I took the snorkel off the air box, w/ the K&N filter I had since new, it seemed to have more power on the highway in overdrive (w/ my oversized tires)....pulling up hills better.
I also got much better highway mileage....the only other thing i did was put some Gumout 'Regane' fuel system cleaner, and then Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas & oil.
(oops....I did have the wheels balanced and the front end aligned)
I am not sure what worked best, but what always took about a third of a tank now takes less that a quarter!
I am VERY happy....and hope it lasts.

Next I am going to put on a free flowing muffler....should be a little more power, and mileage.
Every little bit helps w/ the 4 bangers.

p.s. My 1998 2.5 has a 'tuned' factory cast iron exhaust manifold....it looks like 2-1 headers.

Thanks guys. It sounds like I will be playing with the air flow a little.
