Check engine Light

I have an 89, 2.3L, 4wd ranger. it seems to run good, but when i start it and it goes on cold idle,(choke) it wont come off of it and idle down unless i drive for about a mile then shut the engine off and start it up again, then it idles down and runs great until next morning! than when im goin down the road in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear, if i lay it to the floor the check engine light starts flickering on and off, but it seems like the longer i drive it the worse it gets, it runs fine, has good oil pressure, but it only does it if i put it all the way to the floor in those 3 gears, then once i let off it stops! any suggestions?

I have not had any success with getting codes out of it! But also i did notice the other day, it seems like when the trucks when driven longer and longer as in 1-2 hours straight, the light flikers more often and does it constantly when im driving down the road 45- 55 mph 3rd,4th and 5th gear!? but it gets worse and worse the longer the trucks been running, and first thing in the morning when the trucks cold, it doesnt do it!?

dude, pull the codes, it's not that hard. You can either go buy a 30 dollar code reader or use a multimeter like this... http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.html your computer will sotre the codes even if the light is off. a check engine light on an OBD1 truck is almost a miracle. use the code so you can get a hint as to what to start looking at.

could just be a loose wire somewhere losing a connection and then regaining it. if you don't want to pull the codes, i'd start by checking all grounds and all connectors. every once in a while i clean out all the connectors with starting fluid. works real good and drys fast, just be sure it's all the way dry before plugging them back in.

you should at least get a code 111 for everything checking out good. no codes at all means something is not right.

Usually a flashing CEL means a misfire is happening.
