Doing some engine research. Need advise.
It would be nice if my stock 94 2.3L 5speed 215k miles would last forever, but that's not reality. I'll have to get something newer sometime in the next several years so I'm starting the research now.
I'm considering getting another 2.3L, but I'm not opposed to something else. I've been quite satisfied with my current 2.3L. Could use a little more power in a strong headwind. I've heard the new engines have a little more power.
I just found out that with my current engine you have to pull it to get the oil pan off and replace the oil pump. I'm sure design is not easy, but give me a break. I do almost all my own repairs, but I'm not set up to pull an engine. Nor do I have the space. Would be nice if the spark plugs were easier to get at. Would like to avoid things like this.
Will be looking for a stock truck with under 75k on it. Not looking to do a build or spend a pile on mods. What year would be my best option for a modern engine? Say around 2005, give or take. If the one I have lasts for a while I might be looking for a later year. How have the newer engines been to work on?
First of all I'm looking for something fairly easy to work on. Secondly would be longevity. From what I understand these small engines run a long time. So far that's also been my experience.
I plan on doing some thorough research so you'll find me posting in a lot of other forums in the future. 3.0, 4.0, drivetrain, etc.

Here's an answer to my own question. Looks like they will be making the Ranger through 2011. Apparently they extended production a couple years because sales picked up. Sounds like it is possible they will continue production if they take it overseas. I'm quite proud to support the locals in St. Paul where my truck was made. I don't think I'll buy another if it leaves the country. At least I will not have to worry about that on my next purchase.
