Flywheel problems on a '94 XLT 2.3l 4cyl

Hi folks...sorry my first post has to be a negative one...

Basic info: ~100k miles, fairly fresh rebuild on the engine (within the last 10k), no fluid leaks, 2.3l 4 cylinder (Mazda engine)

It looks like my flywheel is torn to shreds and I have no idea why. I know that this is probably going to be an expensive repair because I don't have the facilities to do it myself. The good news is that I know a lot of auto repair shop owners in Brandon and Tampa so I can probably catch a good deal. My question is - about how much am I looking at MSRP for a flywheel and what's a guesstimate on what the labor charge would be to replace the flywheel? I'm almost certain the whole transmission has to come out, correct? Any ideas on what I could do to limit my costs as much as possible? I just lost my job so I'm in a tight spot for the time being.

Any help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks
Mike

The cheapest route is definitely going to be removing the transmission yourself or you're probably looking at anywhere from $500-$1000 to do the job you're talking about.

It's not that hard to do if you take your time.
