Help, half my plugs firing spout circuit open

Let me start off with saying I have a 94 ranger 2.3 4 cylinder dual ignition 180000 miles, and it has been the most reliable and slowest car I've ever had. So a few weeks ago my check engine light intermittently starting coming on, now it's on most of the time. I first pulled code 122 spout circuit open. I then checked with my timing light and found out only half my plugs are firing, (the drivers side or intake side). I switched my coils around to rule them out, problem pursists. After doing my research I decided the problem was most likely the Ignition control module or ICM. Well today bought one for 140 bucks and installed it. Well at first it seemed to be working, all plugs were firing, then the check engine light came on, half firing, then it went off again all firing. Well I was optomistic and took it for a test drive, it seemed ok, then engine died. It started up again fine and I got home. So when I gave it gas, it missfired like crazy and died. Needless to say I was pissed. Anyways I figurerd I rather run half my plugs and not have weird misfiring and dieing issues so I put the old ICM back on. Thankfully I was able to return the new one. Needless to say I'm back to square one. I've read a lot on 4 banger rangers having issues like this, but no real solutions, has anyone had any luck fixing this or have any suggestions as to what I need to looks at. Thank you so much for reading and helping.

I have the same exact problem. Mine is backfiring on decel and idles like it has a big cam. Plus it smells really rich and gets bad mileage. I've done the same by swapping coils around with no luck. I pulled codes koeo-218-222-223-224 koer-998-224 its a 94 2.3 5 spd. Any help would be greatly appreciated cause I've been fighting this for a while. Thanks, Daniel

I have found out there are several ECU units and you have to make sure they go by numbers and letters when ordering good luck I am going to find out if my problem is fixed Wednesday keeping fingers crossed they sent me the wrong one and I lucked out by taking a picture of the number and bar code before exchanging. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

you might want to see if your crank shaft sensor is dirty or is bad on the front of crank pulley

This problem is electronic and comes and goes. Still can't figure it out. Just drive it till the wheels fall off I guess lol.

what is manufactures date and is the icm part of the computer or by its self because if you have a cam sensor it controls fuel as well as fire.

It is by its self. Mounted on the intake. Mine doesn't have the cam sensor. I believe only California models in the 94's??
