parking brake cable??

ok i have a 95 4cyl and it is a 5 speed. the other day when i parked my truck and engagued the parking brake i heard a loud POP!!! and now the parking brake does not work at all. there is no pressure on the pedal when i push it in and when i go to release the brake it wont even snap back. so i got under my truck to try to fix figure out the problem. the cable from the pedal to where the split is seems fine but at the split is seems like the passanger side is still working but the driver side cable will slide in and out without any resistance does not pull on the brake at all. i believe that the drivers side cable is broke but i have not had the drum off to make sure that it is.
so my question is:

1. can i buy the 3 part cable as three parts seperatly or do i have to buy all three as one piece??

2. where can i find the cable at?? local autoparts store such as autozone or will i have to go get it from ford??

3. i have read on this forum about the parking brake cables getting rusted out and snaping. would it be a good idea to do both driver and passanger side cables at the same time to try to prevent me from having to do this again in the near future because of the passanger side breaking?

4. is there a better way to fix this problem?? or is it just another bad design by ford?

Just wear and tear... if it doesnt get used all the time, moisture gets in the line and rusts the cable..

If it were me..

I would contact ford, and get at least both rear ones for now...

AZ, napa, etc doesnt carry them.. at least when i called about an 02 a week ago.. no one had a listing or in stock

what do you need a parking break for though really? i have a stick and i do use my e brake all the time to park or just slide... but if it came down to 150$+ to fix it just leave your truck in gear... and in an emergency situation if your main brakes go most of the time your e brake does to i found out the hard way...

Well one good reason is to pass inspection......if your state requires it and you do not "know anyone". Another for me is my wife who "forgot" to leave it in gear the other day...as it rolled towards me after getting out!

first off thanks for the responce buckgnarly that helps alot! becasue of your responce a $150 fix is now a $60 fix.

and second i want to have a parking brake becasue it is not good for the transmission/motor, be it a auto or a manuel transmission, to support the weight of the truck all the time. another reason is i want a second line of defence, i always park my truck in gear and with the parking brake on (which is what everyone should do with a auto or a manuel so that the weight of the vehicle is not resting on the tranny). and i park on a hill every night at my house and dont want the transmission to hold my truck in place. i would rather pay for parking brake cables any day over paying to rebuild a transmission. plus the cable that just broke is the one that came on the truck the day it was built. 13 years old and 175000 miles later it breaks and the transmission is still good.
