Just Puzzled Cannt get Codes, Bad MPG ??

Ok heres the deal. 93' Ranger 2.3 It runs pretty good but not much power on the hills and it pings. I check the mpg and it was about 10 so i know there's something wrong. I cannt get any codes? After reading all the info when i turn the key it says wait till the relays stop making noise and the fuel pumps stops running. Well the pump never stops. The only thing i have done was clean the MAF and no change.
So not too sure where to start.? Oh yea. did the fuel pressure regulator too.
Aloha, docmott

I'd start with plugs, wires, ignition coil air filter and some fuel injector cleaner.

thanks for the reply! the real question is i cannt get any codes out of it? i know something is really out of whack. i've looked at the way to get codes and it just doesnt work. the truck is a 93' so they are flash codes.

Don't know what to tell you. Not even sure if the 93 is the same as mine...90'.

Heck, I don't even know what happens if there are no codes....

*hopefully someone else will jump in. (maybe you didn't jump the correct pins????)
sorry i can't help

yes yours is the same, i've seen 2 ways to do it and both do he same thing.
Can you tell me, when you turn on the key to start, does the fuel pump go off after a bit?
To start with, I think its starting there. Mine wont shut off, it keeps running.

Having bad gas mileage won't necessarily throw a code as the engine believes everything is working as it should. If your mileage is that bad and you haven't changed the easy stuff in a while (or have never chaged it since buying your truck) it's a cheap and easy place to start since you can do it yourself.

i live on Molokai in the middle of the Pacific, the easy stuff parts here aren't cheep. most stuff is about twice the price. the eng light is on so i know there is a problem. the plugs are black so i know its running rich. the plug wires are new. im old school, i try to fix things, not just start replacing everything. if it was newer 94' i have a friend that could hook it up to his computer. in that case i all i can do is read the flashes, but i havent got that far yet. jump the pins, turn on the key and all i get is one steady light?
thanks for your response, aloha, docmott

I'm at work so getting back to you is slow. I think you are starting right. CEL on means there is code in there. Hook everything up, jump in the cab and turn the key to on but NOT run.
Yes, the relays should stop clicking very soon. 1-2sec i think? Then the test light you hooked up to flash will start.

***I'm really thinking you either don't have the jumper in correctly or the test light is in the wrong spot.

ok,heres what i did today, i used the Inspectors notes and jump the pins again. when i hook up the test light it comes on even with the key off. when i turn on the key it get brighter and stays on. no flashes? i also removed the fuel pump relay and turned on the key, same o. also climbed under the truck and took off the pump side line of the fuel filter. turned on the key, lots of GAS tried to stop it with my finger, no luck. lots of pressure. sooo why does the pump stay on all the time?

now does this make since. the battery has been unhooked for a few hours. would that reset the codes? everything is hooked backup I turn on the key and the eng light comes on?????? doesnt make since to me. makes me still wonder about the brain box. OK look at the first pic, can you see the brown ring around that ?? the other pic you can see whats on top.

Dude, you are so beyond me, I'm no help. Keep us posted.

Don't quote me on any of this but
*unplugging the battery should wipe out some of the codes. It shouldn't wipe all of them.
-i don't know how to explain it (cause i really don't know) but codes are stored one of two ways. If something throws a code once the truck remembers it in short term. If it throws that code again within a specific time it stores it in....long term? Hahaha, sorry this sucks but hopefully you get what i mean. Your specific codes can only be cleared by checking them then....something, i forget and am late for work.

Usually, when you can't get codes, it means you need a new ECU. They can still run but bad mileage, etc, will be the side effect.

also, i think when you start turn the key the eng light comes on, after the engine starts and alls well the light goes out. im not really sure because my light is on all the time.
im starting to think the brain box is bad and its just in some kind of drive it to the shop mode??

It'd be cheaper to get a reman unit than sending it to the mainland for testing.

Thanks, I'm waiting on my buddy to finish porting the lower intake. Then I'll be buying my SCT tuner from Lasota Racing and installing the intake, inj, maf and tuner. Just installed the Screamin Demon coil and it looks like the mileage has increased from 19 to 20/21 mpg. I'll know when I top off in a day or two.

Wow, the ecu's are usually around $125 at the Autozones around here.
