Just no. Just no. Don't bother. Ever heard the phrase "polishing a turd"? You'd spend enough to get that extra 50 HP out of that motor that it really wouldn't be worth it.
If you want it to run smoother, do the air filter and plugs, and see how it runs. SeaFoam it, change the oil, and give the truck a good wash. Then go on Craigslist and start hunting for a engine. Haha...
Seriously though, with that many miles, you'd be better off getting a new block and building a fresh engine to swap in. Even if it was out of T-Bird or something with a Turbo.

Do I think 2.3T builds are cool? Damn right I do. They are different and fun. But 90% of the people out there don't have the know-how or the cash to finish a build like that.

Performance Exhaust
K&N Intake mode
Plugs
Change Axle Ratio
Reducing tire diameter
Far from that... and considering cost / benefit..... I would also recommend to drop a bigger engine on that. !
By the way, I own a 4 banger too and I love it. Think never change it for an V8. maybe I´ll buy an additional big truck (with a V8) but think my Ranger is perfect with that inline 4.
Hope can help.

Would that be for the '03 in your sig or the '96 in your s/n? If it's the '03 I don't think one has been completed in a Ranger yet unless it's a remote mount system. If it's the '96 I have about 3,000 in the build that went into my '99 and thats just the engine. That doesn't include the clutch, tuning, gauges, and anything else you may run into.

Ahh ok. Take a look at this thread then. It should give you the basics and an intro to what you're looking at.

Re-gear to a numerically higher ratio (deeper gear set). That's about all you can do to make that motor make any HP other than putting a turbo on it.
There is no replacement for displacement.
If you re-gear, you will feel like you got your moneys worth, even though it won't actually make any more HP, all its doing is giving you fake torque (same torque as before just at a faster rate) = best bang for your buck.
Or do a good tune up, a CAT back exhaust and a K&N and be done with it. It is what it is and can't be anything else.

I dynoed my 2.4L about two years ago at 161hp with simple exhaust, intake, and ignition modifications. They do make high-performance race heads and other componates but I just can't justify spending the money on a tiny four banger, its a 2.4L four cylinder no matter what you do it'll never make any kind of real power.
