1985 Ranger 2.3L 4speed automatic

Hello All,

I just purchased my first Ranger at a local non profit auto auction. It has 46k miles on it and seems to have had a good life. I drove it home and checked it over. Someone had just installed a new battery, plugs, air filter, fuel pump, and changed all the fluids. I checked out the brakes, and drivetrain and everything seems in good shape.

Old Blue, as I have named it, has some hesitation and sputtering on start up but generally has decent power. I took it out for a test drive on the highway this morning to clear some cobwebs. It would accelerate to 65 mph but then when I tried to hold it there and just cruise awhile after a couple of minutes it seemed to start bogging down and losing power. If I hit the accelerator it would down shift and come back up to speed. I gave it bout 50 miles of highway time just to see how it handled and this behavior did not change.

So I am looking for ideas on where to start troubleshooting this old Ranger.

With Regards
Carl

When I picked up my 90 Ranger, it had a battery that was not strong enough to ensure multiple starts of the engine, and by the time I made it to the highway, it was entirely depleted. The truck did the same think you are describing, it would coast at 60/65 for a few miles, but would then sputter and start to lose power. Backing off the gas seemed to return power, but trying to pump any gas would cause the truck to stope entirely. It was indeed just a bad battery in my case. I also replaced the alternator before I relplaces the battery, whether it was needed or not, I'm unsure, but the truck Runs well now.

May be worth looking at? Since you already have a new battery, possibly check th alternator?

Thanks Keyareme,
I did notice with the engine at idle, simply turning on the blower fan for the heater caused The engine RPM to drop significantly. It may very well be worth checking the alternator output

So I have had time to get back to this project truck.

I checked the codes using an Innova 3145 Ford Code Reader.
KOEO - returns 11, 10 System OK
Ignition Timing Test - check OK
KOER - returns 41, 34
41 - HEGO(H02S) sensor voltage low/system lean
34 - EGR control circuit fault
OR Defectice EGR pressure transducer sensor

Any suggestions on next steps
