Well go check the tag, it'll take you 2 seconds. That way we know the gears. Yes with 31's you should be fine.

theres no way you have 5.75 in that you tag should say maybe 75 373 or 75 355 or possibly 88 355 or 88 373 or 88 410

what size wheels/tires did your truck come with stock? With 225/70/R14's I remember reading that I have a 3.45 gear, but I'm definitely going to go check that now on the diff cover.

walk out, get down and read the axle tag. or you can figure it out based on what your door says but thats not as reliable if its possible it was switched. you have a 7.5" diff so its 75 somethin. 373 would mean 3.73, pretty common sense.

my 97 2.3 has 31s and it hates hills and highway speeds. you can forget about 5th gear. and if you mud ride you can only spin a tire in 1st my suggestion is if you have the money gear it.

Actually I was wrong. Check this link at the ranger station Ford Ranger Axles - The Ranger Station and compare that with the code on the inside of your door and also the one on your differential bolt cover. After looking it up on mine I'm pretty sure I have 4:10's, but like I said mine came with 14s and the 225/70/R14 tires, so yours might be taller gears if it came with 15s.

My 97 2.3 had a 7.5 and 3.73s open diff, which is code 86 on the door chart. I now have a R7. I'm not sure if any 4 bangers pre 97 came with 4.10s unless it was the 4wd, not saying they didnt put them in them or anything, just that I have never seen one.

Regearing is expensive. Cheaper to find a 8.8 axle at a junkyard with LS and 4.10s. Thats what I did. Came out to $225 for me. It was out of a 2002 ranger 4x4 4.0 liter. Some will say explorer axle but its got disk brakes and you have to convert things over for it. Ranger axle is direct bolt up. 31s and 4.10s is ok, thats what I have, 4.10s and stock tires is really fun/

hmm, let me check it again, I might've read it wrong.

EDIT: At least on the door, it definitely says axle code 87, which looks like it corresponds to 4:10's. I'll try and get pics tomorrow to make sure, and also check the diff cover again.

gears

Another way to check gear ratio if your having trouble reading the tag or it has been removed would be to jack up the rear end so that both tires are full suspended off the ground and count the # of turns the drive shaft(or pinion) makes for each turn of the wheels(or ring gear). So if you have a 3.55:1 gear ratio the drive shaft turns 3.55 times for every turn of the wheel. Going to a 31" tall tire from stock you will need to re-gear your 7.5 to 3.93:1 ratio.

this is your easiest bet lol. Check on your drivers side door jam and look at the axle code. scroll down on the link im posting and look under RANGER and find your code. it will tell you what you have.
