Actually I was wrong. Check this link at the ranger station Ford Ranger Axles - The Ranger Station and compare that with the code on the inside of your door and also the one on your differential bolt cover. After looking it up on mine I'm pretty sure I have 4:10's, but like I said mine came with 14s and the 225/70/R14 tires, so yours might be taller gears if it came with 15s.

Regearing is expensive. Cheaper to find a 8.8 axle at a junkyard with LS and 4.10s. Thats what I did. Came out to $225 for me. It was out of a 2002 ranger 4x4 4.0 liter. Some will say explorer axle but its got disk brakes and you have to convert things over for it. Ranger axle is direct bolt up. 31s and 4.10s is ok, thats what I have, 4.10s and stock tires is really fun/

EDIT: At least on the door, it definitely says axle code 87, which looks like it corresponds to 4:10's. I'll try and get pics tomorrow to make sure, and also check the diff cover again.

gears
Another way to check gear ratio if your having trouble reading the tag or it has been removed would be to jack up the rear end so that both tires are full suspended off the ground and count the # of turns the drive shaft(or pinion) makes for each turn of the wheels(or ring gear). So if you have a 3.55:1 gear ratio the drive shaft turns 3.55 times for every turn of the wheel. Going to a 31" tall tire from stock you will need to re-gear your 7.5 to 3.93:1 ratio.

this is your easiest bet lol. Check on your drivers side door jam and look at the axle code. scroll down on the link im posting and look under RANGER and find your code. it will tell you what you have.
