No idle at start up

Hello everyone first post been lurking for a while anyways i came across a 89 ranger stx no power steering ac no frills its got a 2.3 and is a 4 speed with overdrive. She has a new battery and alternator good compression and the motor runs like a sewing machine.

I am having a problem when cranking over itll start and turn once or twice then die so i have to feather the gas peddle like one would do on a old carburated car once i have her warmed up she runs fine but now she is having a high idle all the time when i come to a stop with the clutch pushed in, also when coming to a quick stop shell act like she wants to die.

also after idling for to or three minutes shell just shut off any help appreciated just thinking it might be the fuel pump or the iac

Welcome to the forum Shaun.
I'm Not sure if you have an IAC or not , or if that year just has an adjustable screw for the butterfly stop.
I'm sure someone will chime in soon.
It doesn't sound like a fuel pump problem though.
New plugs and wires ?
Timing belt ever changed ?

wasnt thinking it was the pump changed fuel filter and cleaned throttle body with throtle body intake cleaner thought it might be the coil packs but trying to see if there is a way to check them before i buy

Yes you have an iac valve
See the silver thing on the black box that is the iac on my 87 ranger not sure if your 89 is the same.
Sounds like you just need to clean or replace the iac.

The starting and idling is under control decided to buy a scanner. I was getting codes for parts that werent even on the truck. So i change the computer and evrything runs fine it previously had a 95 computer in there causing a maf sensor code my truck doesnt have one. on to the present everything had been running good no cel or anything until i left class this morning. I pulled out pretty quick and it was wet causing my tires to spin then all of a suddden it started jerking and no acceleration.

No biggie thought clutch was slipping getting ready to replace but then cel comes one and i run a 18r code and a 98r code

so what is a spout circuit open failure 18r
and is that causing test failure hard fault 98r
