A question from a new guy.

Hello. I just have a few questions for anyone driving a Ranger with a 2.5 I-4. IM looking at a 2001 thats for sale right now and just wanted some more info on this engine. I work in automotive parts and wanted to look for prices for parts and such on these engines and found nothing. Only 2 V-6s came up in my stores listings. So I got suspicious and did my research and found out that they came with 2.5s up to mid winter 01 when they were replaced with 2.3s. Now that ive solved that mystery I got a few questions for owners of these trucks. What are these engines like? Ive heard they suck for gas mileage and thats about it. Also this truck had a new cylinder head put on. Are heads issues with these engines? Any info at all would be very helpfull.

I see, well ive done some browsing and heard something about knocking that was actually a part on the crankshaft or connecting rod....might explain the new head. I also frown on how the IAC is held on with zip ties...and the PCV hose is cracked and someone used an old screw clamp to hold it to the valve cover.

But its a step side....those are my weakness.

I had a 2.5 2001 Ranger. It ran well but had a ping issue while going uphill at times. Tried everything I could do to get it to stop....but I was never totally successful. It was underpowered (of course) but always did what I asked of it. I now have a 2.3 liter Ranger and feel that it is a much improved engine over the 2.5. Smoother, idles better, no pinging, and gets better mpg. Oh, and it has much better power too.

I also have a 2.5L. Mine is a 1998. I have 75,000 miles on it. I bought it with 63, I put 11,000 miles on it in 8 months. I have had no troubles. I love it. It is quie a bit of power with the 5-speed. I have gotten 29 MPG twice. I usually get 27.

I've got a 2.5 with 144k miles on it and it runs great. 0-60mph time in 9 seconds, and gets 22-23mpg but im not easy on the gas pedal......and as far as I know, it doesn't use any oil.

My 2.5L had 526.000 miles on it when I did my engine swap and it ran fine, The engine became rather noisy so I swapped in a new one other than being ball less I think there pretty good little engines easy to work on.
