Yes? No? What are everyones opinions on this? I would have room to put 35's on but am not sure if I should. Even if I regear to something like 5.13's do you think that I should do this or no?

I really want bigger tires. And I would run them mostly in the summer but not so much in fall and winter because I do a lot more highway driving going back and forth to school.

Oh yeah and if I do it would be something like a pro comp or nitto and most 35's only measure 34 so I don't think it would be too bad.

 

what are you running now?? you will notice a power loss and you will stress the motor more. You will also loss MPG so its all in what you are looking to do.

 

Go with 4.88's and 35's, you'll be fine. My buddy ran 33's and 3.73 for the longest time with a 4banger manual and he was fine...

I have 4.88's and an auto and it's way too much gear for me. It revs a couple hundred rpms more than it needs to.

Don't go with 5.13 though...

 

im also thinking that but my truck has an auto tranny..... because fabtech 5.5 and a 3" bl will clear 35's with fiberglass but will the auto tranny handle it if i regear with like 4.56's?

 

Why sure why wouldnt it, your making it easier on the trans

 

well because i think the auto tranny in rangers suck anyways..... my freind went through 3 auto trannies, behind his 3.0 in 2 years .... i know that gearing your rear end will make it easier then not geared but would it make it the same as stock????

 

imo.....for a 4banger and 35's: 5.13. you need deeper gears to compensate for the tires and the low output torque of the engine.
35's = 34.8"

 

so with 5.13's it shold have stock power? so the 35's wont totally bog the $hite outta the engine?

 

Find a gear cal. and see what it says is right. 5.13s will probably be your best bet, next 4.88s might be alil high but if its never in anything to thick 4.88s should be fine.

 

A good formula to figure out what your new ratio should be....

new tire diameter / stock tire diameter x original gear ratio = new ratio needed to bring back to stock.

For example(my truck)

34.8 / 30.5 = 1.14 x 4.10 = 4.67:1

And....since there are no ratios like that avalible...there's 4.56 and 4.88 for my axles. I'm chosing 4.88 for the extra lower gear for wheelin' and spirited street driving.


Higher the number = higher the rpms on the freeway, "faster" the truck will feel at low speeds, better city mpg, less fwy mpg.
Lower the number = lower the rpms on the freeway, "slower" the truck will feel at low speeds, less city mpg, better fwy mpg.

I'll use my brother's truck as an example...

34.8 / 28.3 (which is 225/85r16) = 1.23 x 3.73 = 4.58:1

So on my brother's 4cyl, to be equal to stock ratio/feel while driving, you'll need 4.58:1 ratio, which doesn't exist...so you'll have to gauge the options. 4.56 or 4.88. IMO, because of the lower output of the engine to turn these tires, go for 4.88. Look guys..i just proved myself wrong with the 5.13 line.

You don't need glass for 35's either, my buddy tried mine on before he sold his...it fits just fine w/o glass and the 5.5 and 3" bl.

The tranny...well everyone else drives theirs just fine. As long as you have it geared you'll be fine. I still think 4.88's are fine.

 

Yeah you don't need glass to run 35's. I thought about 4.88's but for the same reason FX4 said I want 5.13's. With the low amount of power and torque that the 4 banger puts out I would rather have 5.13's. And I also wheel so I want lower gears for crawling.

 

The other question I have is, is my 8.8 gonna be good enough? I think I know the answer of yes but just wanna check.

I personally wouldnt....I mean usually people drop their 4 cylinder ranges and make it a nice street truck. But hey if you can then i say go for it. I know my old 2.3 had some good low end in it, for being stock.

 

definitely run 5.13s with 35s on a 4-cyl. To get best mileage you want to cruise between 2800-3200 RPMs and you will need 5.13s to do that. The less you are pushing down the gas pedal the better mileage you will get while cruising. When I go to 35s I wont run anything higher than 5.13s. The 4.10s and 31s are ok, but I it would be better with 4.56s and the 31s which is comparable to the 5.13s and 35s. You have to remember that 35s and a good aluminum rim are gonna weight 50-70 pounds each, which is a TON more than a factory rim and 29 inch tire and takes more power to push also.

 

Also, i know my brakes suck with 31s. They stop ok as long as i dont have to slam them. Like when i deer or something runs out in front of me then im screwed. You will really want to upgrade brakes too, atleast some really good brake pads.

Also i agree with tireiron. 4:10s and 31s on a 4 banger sucks. The gears are to high. 4:30s would be good, 4:56s better. I cal. my gas mileage and was getting 23 highway so im happy with 4:10s but offroad the 4.10s suck.

 

Yes it is my DD but like I said when I start a lot of highway I will go back to 33's.

 

If your going to drop back down to 33s for long distance then just get 4.56s. 4.88s and 5.13s would kill your mileage with 33s. I got my 4.56s from a local for $50, always good to look around.
