Timing belt please help...
So i just got through installing a new timing belt only to find it jumped out of time...anyways this is no big problem. However my question is in regards to the tensioner itself i was reading this article on installing it when i read that the spring cannot be used to set belt tension; a wrench must be used on the tensioner assembly. When i installed my new belt i installed a new tensioner as well. I also found the wrench, part # T74P–6254–A. So i presume that the spring does not have enough tension itself. could this be why it jumped out of time? please help i need ma truck running. btw its a 2.5l.

It's been awhile since I've changed mine, but from what I remember and my experience, I would speculate that belt wasn't tensioned enough when reassembled with the new tensioner.
I also changed the tensioner assembly on mine when I changed the belt. I can remember it took me a few tries to get everything on, tensioned properly and the alignment maintained while I tightened everything. (I didn't use the special tool). Someone else may have a better answer for you. |
do you have a round tooth or square tooth belt. If its a round tooth belt it doesn't need as much tension to hold the belt on tight, but if its a square tooth belt then you should just use the spring to put tension on. I did this on mine. I have the square tooth which needs more tension to keep from skipping a tooth.

k guys got another problem..... so i got back into my belt again today and i swear i must have played with it for about 5 hours i finally settled on what i thought may be have been right i lined up my triangle on the camshaft and the diamond on the oil pump and as hard as i tried i could not get the crank lined up as well as i would have liked but its really only a hair off. I do believe i got the crank as close as possible so i went to fire up and i had a horrible knocking again i am completely baffled. please help guys... i miss my truck already. the only thing i can maybe think of is maybe i was on my exhaust stroke and thats why its knocking so badly. however will the crank line up on tdc of the exhaust stroke i dont see why not?? the book says to have the crank at tdc on the compression stroke anyways help would be appreciated
