1993, splash, 2WD, 2.3 engine front I-beam pinch bolt removal
I've tried about everything I can think of to remove this rusted in pinch bolt in the left I-beam axle, as I need to replace the upper and lower ball joints. Other than 25 years of rust, I cannot imagine what is holding this bolt so fast. And we may have to drill it out; Not sure I know what to expect when I finally get this bolt out. On top of the upper ball joint I-beam, there seems to be some sort of large 6 sided off-set bolt formation that is probably used to set the caster and camber alignment. Is it actually part of the upper ball joint? and will it be included with the new ball joint? From all the pictures I've seen, the upper ball joint is smooth on top, so can I presume this part does not automatically drop out with the ball joint? ?Thanks, Ron
I usually back the nut off until it's sticking out about half a thread past the end of the bolt then put an air hammer on the nut, then get a buddy to put an impact gun on the other side of the bolt and use both tools at the same time. If that fails I get the torch out...
Thanks for the response. There is no nut. Only a 3/8" bolt in a threaded hole in the upper I-beam. The bolt extends all the way through with about 1/16th left, in so there is no way to get a nut on it. It locks the pinch cut around the upper ball joint and holds it firm.
We are thinking about hollowing out the bolt with a 1/4" drill, threading it, and using a 1/4" bolt. In on one side and out on the other. I only hope that works.
